Too Much Orange Juice, Is There Such a Thing?

Kind of a silly question but I'm wondering if you can really drink too much orange juice. I can't get enough of it this pregnancy. I'm going through a gallon every 2 days, and I am the only one who drinks it. Then there are the oranges I am still eating, sometimes 2 a day. What's up with me, lol?

There is a LOT of sugar in it, be careful with that. Even if 100% juice. You don't need the added sugar to make it sugary, it is PLENTY shockingly sugary on its own.

As baby gets bigger and pushes everything out of place you're more prone to reflux to begin with. Acidic foods are a no-no when you have reflux so just for that reason I am concerned.

Of course, you can. Juice is hardly healthy. There is a whole lot of sugar in juice, even 100%. (Especially, in juice from concentrate. "Concentrate" is a fancy word of saying sugar.) You'd be better off eating a bunch of oranges. It's recommended that a normal non-diabetic adult get no more then 40 grams or less of sugar per day. There is 192 grams in a half gallon of Minute Maid orange juice...you are drinking that every day. That much sugar isn't good for anyone. In fact, it's REALLY bad for everyone.

**Juice does not have much nutritional value. The juicing process rids most of the good stuff, especially fiber. The added vitamins are synthetic. Our body does not absorb most of those. With oranges, you can at least absorb all the vitamins, and you are getting all of them.

YES!! You are drinking way too much!! It's bad for you and it's bad for your baby.

If you craving the orange flavor, then eat an actual orange or tangerine so your getting the full benefits of eating fruit including the fiber.

Wondering if you've been tested for gestational diabetes?

Extreme thirst, and craving sugar are pretty telltale.

That said, if the amount isn't a giant departure from normal (I myself drink about 1.5 gallons of liquid a day as my normal... grew up in the desert where I'd be drinking 4-5x that...so my non-desert-living amount is 3x what you're drinking) then a half gallon a day is just your version of brownies or McDonalds every day. MANY of us up our calorie count that much when we're pregnant with no worries.

((OJ is apx 1000 calories per box, which is the same as a single McDonalds meal, or 3 super melty brownies))

Fruit juice in moderation is good for you, but it's also a huge sugar hit without the benefits of the fiber that comes in whole fruit. So much sugar is hard on the pancreas, the organ that supplies the insulin that regulates our blood sugar. I'd want to mention this to my doctor and see whether he/she has any concerns about gestational diabetes.

You should tell your OB/GYN.
That is a TON of sugar.....

My OB/GYN, tells his pregnant patients, no sugar/juice. Just eat the fruit if need be.
It is too much sugar.

YES! You can drink too much orange juice! This is a symptom of something wrong, most likely a blood sugar issue. This is more than just a craving and you should be tested for diabetes, have a fasting blood sugar, HbA1C, and maybe a glucose tolerance test as well.

I had a cystic fibrosis patient one time who was drinking a gallon of OJ, and his blood sugar was in the high 700's when he went to the ER. He was in so much trouble with it, he died. It happened very quickly over a matter of days and he was an undiagnosed diabetic.

You need to get your diet under control so you don't get complications with your pregnancy and unborn baby. Don't wait on this!

While pregnant you are gonna go with your cravings no matter what....I dont see anything wrong with oranges and orange juice as long as it agrees with you.

OH my! Yes, that is too much. I would try to water it down more. You are drinking a lot of sugar calories, and it's not good for your blood sugar as well as blood pressure. I would consult your doctor and let her know, your blood sugar could be out of wack. Try just eating fruits, instead of drinking them :)

a 1/2 gallon a day is a bit much. there is plenty of vitamin C in your prenatal vitamin. also, consider how many calories are in a 1/2 gal orange juice. remember. only 300 extra calories are needed per day during pregnancy. easier said than done, but you may want to take it easy on the juice!

Be careful of any acid reflux as the baby grows.. Meaning as you get bigger..

You're drinking 8 glasses of orange juice a day? Yes, I'd say that's too much. Juice has a lot of calories and you're going to pack on the pounds, plus that amount of citric acid is bad for your stomach. Juice doesn't have lots of nutritional value. In pregnancy, the most important thing you can eat is protein, and juice has none. You are filling yourself up with juice when those calories should be for food.

Too much raises the pH level of your body and can cause you to have stomach problems. Too much vitamin c, while not deadly, can cause you to have a bout of nasty diarrhea....

I was drinking a gallon of milk (skim) and a gallon of O.J. not from concentrate with calcium a week. I never had any probs with my sugar or bm's lol. I figured it was what my body needed plus I craved a half 3 slices cheese sandwhiches. for some reason I could not eat a whole sandwhich but 1/2 hit the spot and loaded with kraft cheese. now I can hardly eat 1 slice of cheese it totally grosses me out.

Some women crave salt you are craving vit c. just rinse your mouth out through out the day bc of the acidity on your teeth. gl talk to your OB and see what they think.

I think that while you're pregnant, your body craves the things it needs. For a while with baby #1, I craved chalk (yes, obviously not a food, and I didn't eat any!). I asked my doctor, and he told me to try eating tums, because it was likely my body wanted calcium. I ate Tums, and that satisfied my craving, as he had predicted. Being that you crave oranges, your body may need vitamin C. I would be a little concerned about drinking that amount of it due to the sugar - you may want to check with your doctor just to be sure you aren't over-doing the sugar intake. But if your blood sugar levels are okay, then drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice seems like an okay thing to be drinking!
