Too Much Nausea

Hey all,
I am pregnant with baby #2 and have been experiencing way tooo much nausea and vomitting this week at 20 weeks. I did not loose this much food at all between 6 and 13 weeks, now I am not able to keep down much and have lost 10 pounds since it started. Liquids stay most of the time, but food is another issue alltogether! I thought I would be having midnight cravings by now, but I am having the oposite experience. Just when I feel better, and eat, it does not stay. With my son I had a migrain at 20 weeks but when it passed, I was back to normal, last week I had a worse migrain, and the nausea has been terrible even since the headache went away. I could get worried soon, and do not want to end up in the hospital... Herbal Teas help, and I take 2-3 of my sons daily vitamins because they stay down, loads of water, and very plain noodle soup with carrots, celery and onion and also yogurt have been my staples for a week now, occasionally bread will stay, but that is about it. Most other things come back to haunt me almost immediately. Any input is welcomed, is anyone else going thru this or have you? My mother was hospitalized at least 2x with me due to a similar problem that lasted consistently for 42 weeks. I have not been that bad, no passing out or other problems... I feel like the flu parked itself in my body and will not go away. uuugh, A.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, at 36 weeks the tagamet has helped and I stopped feeling nauseated instantly. I have been taking it for half of my pregnancy and I am almost at the end. Thank You for all the input and support. Now I am just waiting for our little man to join us. A.

Hi A.! I had terrible "morning" sickness every night. Finally my doctor (who was my uncle-in-law) gave me Zofran and it worked well. He didn't recommend herbal treatment because herbal treatments are not regulated by the FDA which means the potency of the herb WILL vary. There are also some very serious side affects (some even deadly) with mixing certain herbs and other meds, even OTC meds. Ginger tea also helped me some. I would buy fresh ginger root and brew my own tea. My doctor told that morning sickness is a sign of a strong pregnancy and I should be happy. :) My daughter is now 2 1/2 yrs old and amazing, but I can't imagine having that severe of morning sickness and taking care of her too. Good luck!

I know how you feel. I had this problem with my first pregnancy. What did work tremendously, was acupuncture. Ever since even the 1st session, all my nausea and migraines went away completely and did NOT return for the remainder of my pregnancy. Try it. It is painless. Don't worry. Hope this helps. This is the only thing that helped me and my friends.

Hello A.. I know exactly what you are going through. I just had my first baby and I was just as bad as you were up until 26 weeks and I also lost 12 pounds. I wouldn't stop throwing up and it became to a point where I just sat in the restroom for hours because it was a constant thing. If you can hold down liquids that's great because if not you'll get dehydarated which isn't good. I almost got dehydrated and I didn't want to go to the hospital so my doctor ended up giving me suppositories. Yup, that really sucked but it helped me so much so that I could at least get something into my stomach without having to throw it up. If you can, drink a little gaderade and eat soda crakers too. I hope you will start to feel better soon. People would tell me, "Don't worry, it will soon go away." But of course, you're saying, "Well when?" At the beginning of my 27th week is when it started to taper off so hopefully you'll start to see improvements soon. Were you like this for your first child? Well I wish you the best. Aloha, Trina

I had the same problem. I was hospitalized twice and lost 17 pounds in the first 6 months. At the hospital, the doctor told me that she took a Soma (sleeping medication)and vitamin B12 combination for her 'all day' sickness. It is an anti-nausea medication in Canada but not here in the USA. It is actually a level A medication (less than taking Tylenol) but was banned here many years ago. I did a lot of research on it and decided to try it since none of the other medications worked. It worked with in a few days. I took half of a Soma and half of a vitamin B12 3 times a day and was finally able to hold food down. I delivered a full term 9 pound baby boy this past summer. He is a very healthy and happy child! I don't have the info written down any more, but there is one type of Soma you can take and one that you cannot. The Baby Center web site has info on it. I remember taking the Soma in a red box. If I were you I would research it for yourself and try it. I took a lot of prescribed medications and after months of getting sick this was the only thing that worked. Good luck!!!

I'm sure you will be fine. I have two kids and I was sick the whole time with them both. I threw up everyday and even the day I gave birth. It sucked so much. They told me to eat dry toast, eat plain noodle soups, it kinda worked but not really. Try the seabands and it didn't work!! I tried everything. They had nausea pills, but it didn't work. I lost weight at first with my first one. But gain a whole lot, but don't understand why!!! My second child I gain maybe 15 pound.. but not till the end. My throwing up everyday was the pits!!! but all worth it in the end! well I hope for you its only for a short period time and not the whole time like me!! Just hang in there!!

Ugg,
I had the same thing for the first 5 months of my pregnancy. I was in the hospital at least once a week for dehydration and severe nausea. I realize now the the nausea medicine, compazine did not help at all, it just made me dizzy. The only thing that helped was too lie down and try to drink fluids and wait it out.
I don't have any advise for you but I just want to let you know that I feel your pain! My son is 3 years old now and I am too scared to get pregnant again! How do you handle the nausea with a 4 year old to take care of?

Hi A.,

Maybe U can try this one. Don't eat and drink at the same time. Give the time between 30 mnt to an hour. Have some sugar free gum after you eat something. Don't wait to eat until you feel hungry, but you better have some snack during that period. I hope it can help you. Good luck ..... LC

I had 2 pregnancies just like that. sick until the end. i was prescribed anti-nausea medication too. i wasn't really happy about that but there wasn't anything else i could do to stop vomiting. are you having a girl? i've heard that morning sickness is worse with girls than boys, that might be why you didn't experience it with your son.

try anything with ginger in it. tea, candy, get a ginger root and cut it up and put it in your tea or anything else you can stand it in. try eating just a little bit several times during the day. instead of eating 3 meals a day, try just a little bit maybe every hour or two.

i know it feels like it's lasting forever. that due date seems so far away, but just focus on today and the baby will be here before you know it. :)

good luck!

Sorry to hear that you have such a hard time at 20 weeks. Ginger candies had helped me keeping my food down and aid with digestion. Cream of Wheat and oatmeal seem to help in my case.
Hope you feel better soon.

I had the exact same problem with my first, and only child - the nausea and vomiting was so bad that I lost 15 pounds in my first trimester, and regularly visited the hospital for iv fluids because I could keep down liquid. My OB prescribed the same anti-nausea pill for me as the woman who already replied: the medication is called Zofran, and while it is a medication, it has been proven not to cross the placenta, so it not dangerous to your baby. It falls into that class of medications that have been tested and proven to be harmless to a pregnant woman and her unborn child.
Remember, it is more important for you to be healthy that worry about the tiny TINY chance that the medication will come into contact with your child: if you cannot eat or drink, you cannot "grow" a healthy baby.
Talk to your doctor about it: if he/she seems unwilling to speak to you about it, get a second opinion immediately. Some doctors are very old school and believe in letting pregnant women with real and very serious complications to suffer it out when it is not necessary.

Good luck.

Hello A.,
With my second pregnancy I was sick all the time. I called my doctor and they prescribed a nausea pill for me. It was a medicine that chemo patients use for their nausea. I would take it before I got out of bed in the morning. It helped right away. I took it for a while the only thing I didn't like was the taste of it. I stopped taking it and for a while I didn't get sick for about a couple of weeks. Then the vomiting started again and every morning before work I was sick. It seems you may have a worse case of morning sickness espeically if you are losing weight. I did hear about eating crackers before you get out of bed in the morning. It would be a good thing for you to contact your doctor since you are losing weight. I hope you feel better soon. Take Care!!

Try Preggie Pops, it is a lollipop that is all natural and comes in different flavors. You can check out their website for more info. I didn't prefer sucking on a lollipop so I bought the Preggie Drops - like cough drops. The drops were cheaper anyway. You can get them at your local babys-r-us. They will know what it is, my store sold it at the register. I was popping them like crazy when I was pregnant, and I swear by them. Hope this helps.
