Too Many Underpants for a 3 Year Old Girl?

My sisters about died laughing yesterday after an impromptu shopping outing. I knew I had to get some more underwear. I had 5 pair that I was using to potty train my 3 year old daughter. I was washing them 2 times a day and they just fell apart after about a month of that. So now that she is about 95% done and trustworthy. I promised her that she could have some more cool ones. I bought 3 packages of 10 each. So 30 plus a few hand me downs. Even though she is mostly going herself, she tends to run in there with out telling me, and she gets lots of drips and skid marks. So she changes about 4 times a day. My sisters are telling me I bought WAY to many and I am insane. Is 30 too many? I dont think so but figured I would hear it out from the Mass. Didnt do that for my 5 year old, but then she was trustworthy and trained by 2 and a diva, so she was wiped by me till 4 and never failed to scream for me while on the potty.

What can I do next?

At $1 a piece, who cares?? Do what works for you! The best advice my mother gave me was to have 30 pair of underwear for college since you never know when you'll be too busy to do laundry and you don't want to do without. I still remember that 25 years later!

The more the better. I have about 60 pairs....I love new undies! When my daughter was a toddler she had about 50 pairs. My sons have tons of undies. And socks....we are sock freaks!

Thirty+ is more than I would buy -- but she's not MY daughter. And she's not your sister's. If 30 works for you, then 30 is the right number.

Underwear is cheap.
At least she changes. I had to have a reminder talk with my 11 yo boy. You know, that we change underwear daily.

Do what works for you. If she's changing panties 4 times a day, you would need 28 pairs to get through the week, so 30 sounds right.

If you're concerned, put a couple of pairs away and SEE if you can get by with fewer. If you can you'll have nice new ones waiting when she stops having drips :) If not, pull them back out and use them.

You're the mom, I don't see why your sisters should care how many pairs of panties your daughter has ;-)

LOL it is a lot of underwear. I would probably only use one pack at a time, but I see no harm in having to much underwear.

Rebecca...half of mine don't wear underwear either.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I keep lots of underwear for my daughter too and she is now five. I used to carry two pairs whenever we went out and flushable wipes just in case. I too keep quite a few pairs for myself.

I only get the cotton ones for me and my daughter either Hanes or Fruit of the Loom. They are cheap and I will pick them up if I see they are on sale. I also replace them like every six months.

I would change my daughter if she had some pee come out and that is normal for children even older ones. I would make sure she is cleaning her backside well that might be causing the skid marks. I still keep flushable wipes in the bathroom for my daughter.

Where they all the same size? Yes, 30 pairs in one size is way too many! You need to check your daughter's wiping, not just because of the skids and the drips but because it could cause irritation. My son has about 10 pairs of underwear at a time. He is 4. We have had the same ones for a year, not expensive ones either. He grew out of them before they "fell apart". I would return at least 1 pack and get the larger size.

Ignore the sisters. Remember the skid marks. And the falling apart of underwear. Sounds like you'll end up with 5 pairs in the end.

Next time, tell them you went shopping for wine...

Now THAT'S something interesting to talk about!!

30 is alot of panties but it's your choice. When my boy was that age, he only had about 20 but not more than that. I would add to his collection as needed but tried to keep it to a managable 20. When he was 3 I had six kids in the house and each kid had about 3 weeks of underware and two weeks worth of clothes. I did do laundry everyday though. Keep working with her to teach her how to wipe properly and keep herself clean.

when my now 4 year old was potty training (around 2 ish) I bought him 3 or 4 packs of underwear (probably about 30 pairs), some fell apart, some he wore more than others, and some just didn't "feel right" so he refused to wear them, now 2 years later, he has none of the original underwear, but still has about 20 pairs. Some may say it's too many, but as long as you are ok with buying them for her, and they fit in her drawer, then I say it's just enough! :) My little guy is a strange one, if he's wearing a toy story shirt, then he must have toy story underwear and socks on as well.... (he did not get this from me! LOL)

Short answer - you can never have enough undies for a child!!

My almost 5YO still changes her panties twice a day - once when she wakes up and once before bed so I am CONSTANTLY washing undies.

I say, if it works for you, then do it.

PS. Thanks for the laugh too!

My oldest probably had 8 pair when he was potty training.
My second has caught up to him in size, so he can wear his undies, or his brother's. And he uses them all up, all the time! It's so frustrating! I've given in several times and bought more, but it doesn't matter, he's always out.

My oldest passed on all of his undies to his brother, all in great shape.
The second trashed them all until they practically fell apart.

Each kid is different. I think it's funny that you bought 30, but mostly because I think the difference between kids is funny, not because I think you overbought. Mom knows best!

It is alot but by the time she changes a few times a day and they are being washed over and over they will wear out.. at least this way they can be rotated out. I wouldn't put all of them in her drawer at once! That could be an invitation to change more often.

Just be thankfully she is wearing any! My daughter always wears them, but our 4 yr old boy wont, he doesn't like the feeling of them... maybe thats just a boy thing lol

I only do laundry on alternating weeks, so 30 pairs sounds perfect to me!

I think that number sounds about right! We need to go to the store to buy more for my dd... who is also "mostly" potty trained, but still has accidents every once in a while (and skid marks--usually while at daycare)... I'd rather have way too many than not enough (like, today I have to do laundry just for her to have clean undies tomorrow)! Also, if there is a poop accident (like the 2 days she had diarrhea), it may just be easier to toss the undies rather than try to clean them (yuk!). :)
