Toddler Warts

I have three year old that had developed toddler warts on her chin and neck. She has couple on her forehead and one on her stomach. There is not much to read on them other than they are contagious and common and go away between the age of 2 and 5. Her dad thinks they are pimples and wants to pop them, she is very skiddish about anyone even looking at them, but she picks them in her sleep. Any ideas on how to make them go away sooner? Or what I can do in the mean time? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I'm assuming you are referring to the viral Moluskum warts? My son had those and my dermatologist gave us an irritant cream. It's a mild cream (not irritating enough to cause itching) that stimulates the immune system to go after the warts. It worked well for us. I haven't seen one on him in months. However, like others have said it can take a year or two for the virus to work itself out (i.e. for the immune system to get on top of it). Duct tape also works, but takes weeks to be effective. I would recommend seeing a dermotologist for more suggestions.

And definitely don't pop them!!

He shouldn't pop pimples on such a little one even if they were. Other than that, not a clue how to make them go away or what to do about her picking them in her sleep. Unless you wanted to have her wear mittens to bed...

These are viral warts, my friends little girl had them. She had to have them burnt off but only because they were getting nasty. Don't pop them, that makes them spread more. The duct tape does work as does the compound W bandaids but if it over a large area then it might not be all that effective or reasonable a solution. You can try putting some polysporin on them and see if it shows any improvement but I doubt it will because that is more for bacterial and not viral. As for scratching, try and keep it covered at all times, scratching makes them spread more. One thing I have read that helps is tea tree oil. You can get it at the local health food store, ask for a mild oil for her skin or something to dilute it with. This is also good for killing foot fungus and normal acne too. It also helps prevent hair lice once kids start daycare or school. Anyway, got off on a bit of a tangent, hope that helps. Good luck

Duct tape does seem to work on warts. I have put a small piece on my daughters and then covered it with a band aid. Try to get the water proof kind so it won't come off easily . But since this is on her chin? It does take quite a while for the tape to work and you have to be diligent about keeping it on.
Good luck.

Hi J.,

My son has had 1 for the past year. Our doctor said it can take 6 mos to 3 years to go away. She also said it is contagious but it's on his wrist and we constantly touch it. Luckily it hasn't spread to us or anywhere else on him. Our doctor highly recommended that we just let it go away on it's own because if she pushed it to go away, it would leave marks. I've read, but have NOT tried, you can put a piece of duct tape on it and it'll sweat itself away. I have no idea if that works or if it was just a myth. Good luck...

I don't know about kids warts, but I recently got one on my heel using apple cider vinegar on a piece of cotton stuck on with a band-aid. I would put it on at night and cover the wart with clear nail polish during the day to prevent it from spreading; the wart was gone in less than a week, and it hasn't come back.

This may not help you because you probably don't want to put duct tape all over your daughter's head, but warts don't like duct tape. My son had them all over his hands and I tried a Wart removal cream and then covered it with duct tape. A dermatologist friend said I could just do duct tape a couple of hours a day. Regardless of what you decide they went away on their own after a couple of months. Good luck.

Melaleuca oil. My step daughter had a wart on the center of her forehead and my son had a big wart of the side of his foot. Every night I would put Melaleuca oil on a cotton ball and would hold it on with a bandaid. I did this for three weeks. My step daughter has been gone for over 2 years now and my son for 3 months.
