Toddler Waking up Once a Night but Going Right Back to Sleep

Hi, mommy experts!
My 20-month-old seems to go through a phase where she will wake up once a night, oddly enough it almost always seems that it's 3:30 a.m. She will stand in her crib and cry, we go in and tell her "baby, it's not time to get up." She will immediately lie back down and go to sleep with absolutely no fuss. This "phase" will happen about every two months or so and will last for a few days and then she's back to sleeping through the night. I can't for the life of me figure it out. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

T.,i know how you feel. for the last nine months my son wakes up at 3:12 am, im not lying, EVERY night at that exact time. He is up for maybe two minutes, and then rocking himself right back to sleep. My son's pediatrician said it could be anything from anxiety issues, or maybe even night terrors. we are hoping to figure out soon, as this gets sooo stressful. gl with your little one, i will update you with any info i catch from our ped.

This is very common. Check for past posts on this subject and you will see that it is one of the most asked questions. Everyone goes through sleep cycles during the night. At times we are in a lighter state of sleep and are more easily aroused. If you are on a regular schedule of bedtime and wake up time, then your body tends to get sleepy at that time and wake up at that time. So that is probably why the waking up is at the same time. As children grow their sleep cycles often change. My two children went through many changes with their sleeping habits. Be thankful that she lays down and goes back to sleep on her own.

This won't help, but just to ease your mind, I think it is common for no reason once in awhile,

My DD goes through these phases too. I know it is hard because then you are wide awake :)
It could be that she is not really all the way awake, maybe she had a dream, or it is possible that she banged herself against the bed and that woke her up.
As long as she goes right back to sleep, I would not worry too much

My daughter has started doing this lately too. She's 21 months. What I'm finding is she needs a diaper change. She is becoming more aware of that feeling. So this might also be the cause.

My dd has done the same thing one to two times a night since 18 months. If she continues to fuss I go in there and tell her to get her drink (she's in a toddler bed and can reach her night stand) and go to sleep- she drops off immediately. Wish I could break that, but at least she isn't up for a long time!

My little guy just turned 21 months today, and he has been doing the same thing. We are down to cutting the last 2 teeth, his two year molars. This might sound a little strange, but it could be teething. I will go in my little one's room and he is sitting up in bed. I lay him back down and cover him up and tell him it is "still dark" and it is night night time and he goes right back to sleep. Maybe your little girl is teething too. My doctor told us at his 18 month visit, this is also the time where they really start dreaming vividly. That could be some of it too. You will also get posts that say, she is waking because she knows you will come in there, it is probably some of that too. I wouldn't worry too much. If you want to keep doing what you are doing, then that is fine. Sounds like everything is ok.
