Toddler Refusese to Sleep Under Covers

My 23-month-old is very strange. He categorically refuses to be under blankets. In south Texas that's usually not a problem (he sleeps in just a diaper 2/3 of the year), but it's getting cold now. I put him in a sleeper suit, but when I check on him, his little hands are so cold. Obviously, there is nothing I can do to force him to sleep under blankets, but I wondered if any of you have kids like this and what you've done about it.

What can I do next?

My daughter is exactly the same way! It drives me nuts. She just turned 2, but she has never liked sleeping under a blanket. (She also refuses to wear any kind of sock or shoe, so I am batteling that as well). My daughter sleeps in our room, so I am up covering her 2 or 3 times a night. Not the best solution, but I don't sleep well anyway, so it works for us;) On the other side of the coin, my oldest daughter sleeps completely covered from head to toe and I have to go in and uncover her face a couple times a night so she doesn't smother. Oh well... Good luck.

My daughter was like that too. She is almost 3 now...and it isn't a problem...but when she was younger we just cranked up the heat in the house. Not the cheapest solution...because we often had the fan on in our room because I can't sleep when it is too hot...but at least I knew she was warm. :)

Hi F.,
One thing you can do is just dress your son really warmly- underneath the sleeper, put on a onesie or a t-shirt and also socks. The layering often helps. (or you could get long johns- Gerber makes them).
If that isn't enough- you can also take some small baby blankets (the kind you swaddle a baby in) and fold it in half- then wrap that around your son's tummy and attach it to his pjs with a safety pin- but make sure you get the kind of safety pin that has a plastic head so that it cannot open if he sleeps on it.
This way- he's "wearing" his blanket!
Good luck!
Adla

Put on socks or gloves if you're worried about his hands. But, if he's comfortable enough to sleep well and it is only his hands getting cold, then I wouldn't worry about it.

My son is going to 5 in February and he STILL does that. He kicks the covers off at night while he is sleeping. We have tried to put socks on him and pajamas but he kicks his socks off also. He has just now kept his pants on. I never really new how he got those off in the middle of the night. We have found nothing to keep him warm at night when it is cold, so we have just gotten use to it and doesn't seem to bother him. If you find a way please let me know!
