Toddler Has Unexplained Dark Spots on Body

In the last couple of weeks I have been noticing random dark spot/patches on my 15 month old daughter. They look almost like old fading bruises except she never has fresh new bruises before hand. They come and go relatively quickly, lasting for only a day or two, always in different spots and I just can not figure out what they could be. My husband is convinced they are just bruises but I am wondering if it could be something else.

If anyone has any experience with something like this, any information would be appreciated.

H., please get her to the pediatrician. Bruising can indicate nothing, but can also be associated with illnesses that are more serious.

My daughter; who is now 2, experienced the same thing. She would get bruising on her legs and buttocks. They would appear out of no where and then gradually fade as time past. I ended up taking her to her pediatrician. He diagnosed it as "Mongolian Spots". Her pediatrician gave me literature about it. Don't worry they are not harmful or painful, it is just a dense collection of pigmentation that is close to the skins surface. A good site to learn more about Mongolian spots is www.drgreene.com. I hope this helps.

Hi H.,

You didn't mention your ethnic background, but my friend adopted her daughter from China and she started developing dark spots on her back and other areas of her body. Apparently it is common and quite normal in children of Asian decent, and fades away. I can't remember what it was referred to since her daughter is now a teenager. You probably want to discuss it with your doctor though in case it is something else.

Go to the doctor please, my cousin's daughter had the samething, and it was something.... So please go, if you know she didn't fall and they are not going away. It also could be just a lack in Vit K. Get it checked, why wait...

i agree...take her to pediatrician who might order complete blood work. we had that happen to us when one of mine was 3 years old. if anything, it will put your mind to rest. your husband might be right too, they bruise soo easily, but in this case, i'd still take her in
good luck

NOt sure what that is but I would take her to the dr. imeediately. maybe they are bruised but they are deeper under the skin.... In any case, I'd have it looke at sooner rather than later to make sure it's ok. good luck!!

Hi H.,
I agree that you should make an appointment with your baby's doctor. None of us can tell you what exactly these spots are - only a doctor who examines her can tell you for sure. Always better to get things checked out and find out that they're nothing.

Hi H.,

I would ask the doctor. Maybe her iron levels are really low. I get them all the time, because of my very very low iron.

Hi H., my daughters never experienced anything like this that I can recall but I do remember them having a few questionable ailments. Whenever I was not quite sure if what they experienced was serious or not I would call our pediatricians office and ask to speak to one of the nurses. They would either discuss it with the doctor or suggest I come in and have the girls looked at. If you are not sure, don't assume. Its best to at least make an inquiry to your health professional. good Luck. KH

I remember my stepbrother having unexplained bruise type marks too, and it ended up being a vitamin deficiency. It's worth getting a blood test to find out.
