Toddler Gets Hysterical When Baby Makes Loud Noises

Hello Mothers - I am perplexed and this site has helped me in the past. My 21 month old daughter has always been a well behaved and gentle little girl. She has gone to the same home daycare center since she was 3 months old and has always had the best care. Lately, whenever the 4 month old baby at daycare will squeal or cry, my daughter will get hysterical, sob, get red blotches all over her face, and is inconsolable for 5 minutes or more. There is also another 3 month old baby at the daycare (the provider's son) and my daughter does not react this way at all with his noises. Could it be that at this age, she has already chosen to not like this little girl? Is it a hearing sensitivity? (Although she doesn't react to the kids playing loudly or loud noises at home). I am just at my wits end.

What can I do next?

some babies cries are more "annoying" then other babies. i agree that the baby your daughter has a problem with cries a lot. while waiting for the crying baby to adjust you could read some books to your daughter about babies and why they cry. maybe it will help her deal better with the crying at daycare

My daughter was 2 and 3 months when my son was born,a nd she has always had sensitivity to ALL loud noises, so of course, his crying was a problem, and set her off for a while. We just started explaining why he might be crying and asking her to help do things to calm him ex: bounce the bouncy chair, singa song, give hima toy, help him put his binky back in, if all else fails, go in another room, so it is not so loud. We explained to her that when she cried too, it just made thebaby more scared, so he would cry more, so to try not to cry herself.

Now at 7 months and 2 and 3/4 years, it is going much better - just hink of this baby at daycare as "breaking in" your toddler for the new little one who will be coming to your house. Talk to her about it, 21 months is not too young to understand the stuff I said above.

My first thought is ear sensitivity, does or did your daughter have a lot of ear infections?? When my 4 1/2 yo son was younger we ended up putting tubes in his ears to help with the infections. To this day he is so sensitive and cries and carries on when there are loud noises we have really had to think about where we go. Parades are ok until the fire trucks come, he has never seen fireworks etc, boats because of the motor etc etc. My Dr said that he could just be more sensitive becaause of his ear problems and that he will outgrow it!

R.,
I am a daycare provider and mother of 3 boys. I would suspect that this 3 month old girl that is in your daughters daycare cries a LOT during the day. I am sure to no fault of the provider but some babies are just that way. I have seen my own children and other daycare children react this way to babies that tend to cry a lot. If they start making any noise the kids think the crying is going to start so they react. I would say it will resolve on it's own once this baby gets used to things at daycare.
Good luck!
