OK this is gross- but I need HELP. My 19 month old son does not digest his vegies well at all. For example, I will give him Mac N Cheese with corn, carrots, and peas. The vegies look the same in his poop as when they went in his mouth. Is this normal? Is he getting any nutrition out of this? Should I take him in to the pediatrician? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the advice- the corn was actually in a Gerber Graduate meal prepared for 1 year olds? I will try to take those pieces out before he eats them...I won't be so worried about this- I guess it is pretty normal considering he chews his food really well.

I think this is very normal. My daughter is almost two, and we joke about her "tracer foods". Those foods we know she had at daycare that we get a "report" on later. Our only concern has been that some of the harsher foods sometimes give her diaper rash (black beans, etc.), but keep up the healthy well rounded diet. If he isn't fussy, the foods probably aren't bothering his digestive tract.

Like someone else said I'd hold off on corn until he's a little older. The natural color in carrots and peas is very strong but make sure he isn't washing the food down with any liquids and actually chewing his food before swallowing (give him some models of chewing (really exaggerate your chewing). Make sure the veggies are nice and soft too. As long as he's not showing any signs of coughing or choking while eating it sounds like he's ok.

Hi Michelle,
First, corn is very harsh on the intestines of a one year old. You may want to hold off on corn or limit the amount until he is a little older. As for other veggies, this is pretty typical for a lot of children. Only advice I can give is to try to make sure he is Chewing the vegetables, not swallowing them whole. A lot of toddlers don't chew well enough and chewing aids in digestion. Good luck.

normal and he is still getting the nutrients out of them, plus the experience of eating them. So, keep up the good work of feeding him a good variety of veggies! There is no reason to hold back on ANY veggies at all, corn is a great fiber source for him.

It is totally normal to be able to see the veggies your child is eating after the "go trough the pipes" so to speak. Give him papaya and you will know exactly what he ate. When we gave ours papaya, it was pretty much, ah, papaya today. It will either be the color or you will see it. Unless he is vomiting or having a reaction, I wouldn't worry about it.
