My 2 year old has had the runs for about 2 weeks, i took him to the dr yesterday and the dr said he has what they call toddler diarrhea meaning his stomach pushes food through so rapidly the food dosn't have time to fully digest. He said they see it a lot and as long as he is growing and no blood in stool will outgrow it. He said more fiber will help. Has anyone else had a child with this and how did you help it?

What can I do next?

Doctors recommend what they call the BRAT diet for diarrhea---bananas, rice, apples(or applesauce)and toast. The key is fiber, so try whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice, fruits instead of juices, and any veggies he'll eat. You can also give him fiber supplements---they're pretty tasteless. Good luck.

Well I haven't had this happen with our son, but a friend of mine has with her daughter. She was just a year old when she started having the same problem. Their pediatrician suggested the B.R.A.T. diet for her. Banana, Rice, Applesauce, and dry Toast. She told them to do this for a no more than a week and sure enough it helped and the diarrhea subsided. I babysat for their children and saw a change in her stools just 2 days after following this diet.
Maybe this would work for your little one too! Good luck!

Toddler diarrhea is hogwash in my opinion. It just means your ped hasn't a clue what is causing it. My son had it for years and it isn't normal unless it stops in a short time. It is possible that your child has an allergy or a food sensitivity. An IgE blood test indicates food allergies and an IgG blood test indicates food sensitivities. Milk is the number one allergen so consider that too. A probiotic may be helpful too.

Well, I don't know that we had "toddler diarrhea" but my almost 4 year old is just finishing up a "run" with this (parden the pun) that lasted a bit over 2 weeks. My 2 year old had a smaller version, so I'm guessing it was actually a bit of a bug. I just keep them hidrated, laid off on the acidic foods (especially for my 2 year old because she developed a horrible diaper rash), tried to keep her diet balanced and a little "extra healthy" if you know what i mean. good luck! and if he hasn't developed a diaper rash you might consider keeping some ointment on just as a preventative...that's seems to bother my girl more than the diarrhea!

My two year old had that for several weeks this summer. It sucked, and she pooped through her clothes sometimes several times a day, but she wasn't sick! It eventually just stopped and hasn't come back. Toddler Diarrhea is exactly what the pediatrician said it was. I had never heard of it either, but she said it would only last a short time and she was right. Just keep him hydrated, and always carry some extra clothes with you! Good luck.

When my little ones had tummy troubles like diarrhea and constipation, their pedi recommended that they eat yogurt like Activia that helps regulate the digestive system. It did help. If your son eats yogurt, you may want to ask his pedi about giving him Activia for a while to see if that helps.

My son has had it where sometimes he will have a normal bowel movement then part diarrehea. I would make sure you watch the sugar intake and have him eat more things like apples/applesauce,toast,rice and bananas. I would also watch how much juice he drinks. I find that can effect the stomach and the diarrhea issue. Also does his stomach get upset after he drinks milk or has any kind of diary? He could be lactose intolerant. Good luck
