Hello- thanks for all of your encouraging responses in the past- our 3 year old who is not really interested in potty training- sits but nada in response- has been asking the past few nights, like 4X through out the night- for us to change his diaper- I realize it's a sign for readiness to PT- but he never cares during the day- thoughts? We do change it & tell him to kindly go back to sleep. :) We have also reduced fluids b4 bed. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses- our PA suggested just (trying) to walk him to the potty when he calls out asking his diaper to be changed throughout the night- much like we are trying to do now thru the day. Doesn't help the lack of sleep issue for any of us, but at least last night he slept a little longer between the intervals! Hopefully he will connect the potty with peeing! It is a slow process. :)

stop and shop and toysrus sells diaper doublers for 2.99 30 doublers... if it works to keep your son feeling dryer it may be worth it to get better sleep for both of you. I've used them too at night we like them.

But i'm going thru the same thing (almost) my son doesn't necessarily care all day long about the potty then at bedtime he'll drive himself to tears swearing he has to go and wanting to try a few times in a row crying making sure i'll change his diaper, etc

good luck, just know that you're not alone

N., it sounds like this has started suddenly, and while I don't mean to alarm you, I would take your son to the doctor. A preschooler, whether toilet trained or in diapers, shouldn't be peeing 4 times a night. Waking up at night asking for a diaper change isn't a sign of toileting readiness, kids don't wake up 4 times at night to use the bathroom. A sign of toileting readiness would be going the entire night without a wet diaper - if he is peeing 4 times or more a night, he isn't ready to train - he's peeing too often. He shouldn't be peeing enough four separate times to be uncomfortable from a wet disposable diaper to wake up from it. Call the doctor and let him/her know how many wet diapers your son is having during the night. Also take note of whether he has had increased thirst lately and whether you are changing more diapers or much wetter diapers during the day. Good luck

dear N.,

My children are grown now, however when my son was little they made a product called a diaper doubler. It was an extra pad sold and you could put it inside and in addition to the diaper. It really worked and kept my son dry. I know with boys sometimes they get wet all the way up to their chest while sleeping and it makes them cold and uncomfortable. My doctor always told me a child is really not physically ready to potty train until they begin waking up dry in the morning and at nap time. If they are still wet you are wasting your time because once they wear undies sometimes they will refuse a diaper in the evenings and that will be a mess everynight. i am not sure if they still make these pads but it is worth a try until he is wet and ready to potty train. Good luck

Hi N.
Sounds like he is too busy in the day to bother but having to go in the night may wake him up. Why not say? Since you were so good about knowing when you went in the night, this is what happens in the day. Put him on every hour or so for just a few minutes. I am not fond of sitting in bathroom for hours. Some do say stay to you go. Turn the water on, use the trick of hand in water if necessary. Once mine went the first time they would again. Who knows it may work. Then when he goes to bed at night, one he may not have to go, and two you can say since you went so well all day, yell to me and I will help you go then too. My youngest had to be gotten up when we went to bed to prevent accidents. She was about 3 when she could get up herself when necessary.

God bless
Since I am probably old enough to be your mom, I always say talk to mom, she may have great stories to tell.
