To Moms with Boys Re: First Haircut

My baby boy is almost a year old and his hair is not terribly thick, but it's beginning to get long and wispy all over. I don't think he's old enough to sit still for a professional haircut, so I'm not sure what to do. We didn't do anything with my older son's hair until it thickened up and looking back at pictures, he looked like he had a Donald Trump comb-over! :-) If I trim my baby's hair, should I do it with scissors just over the ears or give him a "buzz cut" with a pair of clippers so it's even all over? Please let me know what you've done with your son's hair. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I trimmed my boy's hair with scissors, but around 18 months he was impossible to keep still and he started getting hysterical about the scissors. So I reluctantly took him to Cool Cuts for Kids. I thought they were overpriced. After going...WORTH EVERY PENNY! I didn't realize how goofy my home made hair cuts looked until he got a "real" haircut. And he bounced all over that chair, and cried and screamed. I have no idea how that lady managed to do such a great job. After his third visit he was no longer scared, which I attribute to the patient staff. Now he is three and he goes to the regular barber with his Dad.

I don't know where you live but I took both of my kids to Cool Cuts for Kids (I think that's how it's spelled)? and they sit in a little firetruck and pick a dvd to watch while they are getting the haircut. Both of them loved it. They also take their picture and put their hair in a little keepsake first haircut card. It's really cute.

M. most hair stylist are used to cutting babies hair while they move a little during a hair cut. I went to school to be a hair stylist but never got my licence. I have cut my own kids hair and taken them to another person to have them cut it and personally they sit still for someone else. Also with as young as he is. They will probably have you sit in the chair and put a cape around you then sit him in your lap and put a cape around him. Then you can help hold him while they cut it. Hope this helps.

I would take him to a kids place - they will let him sit on your lap. Here in Wichita, there is Kids Hair Safari - I saw a coupon for a similar place in DFW, so I know they're around.

The prices (at least here) compare to Wal-Mart. DIY haircuts are traumatic - especially with electronics.

Both my boys starting getting haircuts when they were about 6 months old. They were born with a lot of hair and it was long and wavy and "girly" looking. We went to a great lady in Keller who does all of our hair and they've all done really well. We kind of held them and kept them distracted and she could work quickly and quite well. I still have to get their hair cut once a month to keep it trimmed nicely around their ears. I tried trimming my oldest boy's hair with scissors when he was 9 months old. He jerked his head just as I snipped and I snipped the top of his ear. It bled so hard even though it was just a tiny nick. It was quite traumatizing. He's 7 years old now, and I still have never tried to trim anything on his head. If you do do it yourself, I'd recommend the clippers if you know how to use them properly.

it depends on the hair. my oldest was a buzzcut, ala marine style, from early on. he still does this by choice at age 11. my youngest has finer hair and requires scissors to a basic layered boy cut. sometimes my hubby will do the cuts himself, othertimes we'll have a stylist do them.

I took my son for his first hair cut when he was about 9 or 10 mos. old. I couldn't stand it any longer, Donald Trump is exactly what my son looked like. The did a great job cutting it for me. I went to one of those kid haircut places to do it. I was going to do it myself but I knew he wouldn't sit still. I would do just scissors if your going to do it yourself. Their hair is so fine at that age. We now just buzz my son's hair ourselves. It's so much easier and he has wild hair like my husband so we just buzz once a month.

My son could be dressed in a baseball cap and nascar jacket, wearing all blue, and people everywhere would be "SHE is soooo cute". I didn't bother correcting them because why embarass someone who's trying to be nice, but I was thinking it was time to get his hair cut.
We went to some barber shop on Main St in Grapevine (cute b/c it's got the pole and old timey coke bottle machine and a horse to ride for a quarter). We got his hair cut the day after his first birthday, and it went just fine. My husband wanted to be the one to take him b/c it's a "man thing" he says, but I showed up a little later to take a couple pictures. There's a lady who always does first haircuts there and she was really cool with him, and he was interested in what was going on but stayed still. The only thing he showed dislike for was the clippers (scissors weren't a problem at all). It's loud and right at their head, so of course a little guy isn't going to like that part. They kept some of his hair in a little baggy and presented us with a certificate (graduated babyhood with his first haircut) when we were all done. It was sweet.

I would take him somewhere - the clippers will likely scare him. There are lots of kid friendly places that will know how to handle him if you don't have a stylist you're comfortable with.

Thanks for posting this b/c I've been considering the same thing for my son! He's 18 months, and he's starting to grow a mullet! I'm nervous to cut it myself, but I wasn't sure if it was worth it to take him somewhere. I read the responses you got and decided to take him this weekend! Thanks!

Still to this day my son is a little over 3 1/2 and we still don not use clippers on him. He hates them and it freaks him out. I would just stay w/scissors until he gets older..

Hopes this helps.
