You might call around and ask how they do haircuts. When my kids were little, one around here had a pony they sat on for the cut. They loved to go sit on the pony and held pretty still!

The first time we took him to a regular haircut place. When it came to the clippers he saw it done to dad first so it wasn't as scary. I watched them a few times on how they did it. We have since bought a clipper set and I cut his hair now. I use a 2-3 on the bottom of the back, 4-5 middle, and 6-7 on the top. I transition the sections with the 2nd #. I do use scissors a little on the top to finish blending. It gets easier each time I do it. He sat still for them but not so much for me in the beginning.

Take him to a professional. They're used to dealing with little squirmers :)

Have your husband take him to the barber shop - a guy's day. You stay home - trust me on this!

My hair person did my son's first haircut. He was 2, so he sat on his own in the chair. She charged me 10 bucks which was WAYYYY cheaper than a kid's place. She did a great job and it look awesome. Short enough to count, but soft and well blended so that he still looked 2.

This may sound kind of mean, but I really don't like toddler boys with buzz cuts. I think it makes them look older and aggressive. And I think lots of boys end up with that bowl cut because they want to do it fast, so they just cut across their bangs.

Just ask your stylist if they will do it. We're going again today to get his haircut and he loves to go, my stylist is so nice! And a lot of people will do free bang cuts in between the cuts, so ask about that!

My husband took our son to a regular barbar shop. (Do a look around first, and find one that likes kids. Ask questions..make an appointment. Ask if they usually cut little boys' hair etc. Most barbars have a booster chair for them to sit in. At 14 months old you might want it to be fairly quick so maybe go a little "crew" on top..and leave the curl..he's not too old to have it. Mullets are cute on kids anyway I think. Like I said at 14 months he won't be able to sit still long..if you need it done perhaps you have a friend that can do it. Just be kind if they don't get it just right..a 14 mo. old would be a tough cut. Make sure you ask at the children's places too. Make sure they can deal with THAT young! My son didn't get his first hair cut til after he was two..and we only cut it about twice a year now. (and he's 10).

Just did my 15 month old for the first time last month. We took him to a kiddie place. he was fine for the cutting portion but then she used the clippers on the "sideburns" and neck and that freaked him out. Since it was my first time I thought I'd let the lady do the whole treament, but next time scissors only, the rest is not necessary. I thought the kids place was good only b/c they are used to little kids...

I was a hairdresser for many years and I would not go to a barber shop. Most barber's do not have patience with little one's, and the use electric clippers which can be very loud and scary to children. Go to a kid friendly hair salon or a hair salon that is willing to cut children's hair, ask before you go. Some people just do not have the patience to cut children's hair, so it is better to be sure before you go so he doesn't have a bad experience for his first haircut. Good luck!!

I'd try the barber shop and make it a father & son day like the earlier person suggested the maybe take him out for a little treat like ice cream. Be there though so you can get pictures ad save a lock of his hair from his 1st haircut. Good luck Mom

You can actually cut your son's hair at home with a little practice. A clipper set including cisors, a cape, a clipper and accessories is so cheap-about $20-30 that worth trying. Some kits even include a video tape explaining how to cut hair. As another mom suggested that your husband takes your son to the barber's, you might want to accompany them a up of times and try to learn from the hair dresser.
I have been cutting my son and my husbands' hair for years now. If you have someone hold the baby, and give him something to focus on -such as a movie or a toy. Another option is cutting his hair when he is sitting in his bath. In this case, use only cisors and not the clipper.
You can go conservatively, cutting a little at a time. Just like anything else, you'll get better with practice.

I took our child to my hairdresser.. She was great.. She was patient and was very verbal..

Also I took some books and read while she got her haircut.. That seemed to help. We continued the book tradition for years.. the hair dresser said she looked forward to story time..

we used our local barbershop where our son was comfortable, because we took him each month when big bro & dad got haircuts. With an unwrapped sucker in one hand & one in his mouth, he aced his haircut. He had a head full of curls, & it took 3 whole suckers to make it thru the cut.....but he did great & had a BLAST!

Soooo, how about waiting a couple of months & let your son visit the place you chose 1st? Oh, & take plenty of pictures.....perfect scrapbook page!

I took both of my sons for there first few haircuts to a children place (pigtails and crewcuts). As another poster said, they have movies, cute vehicle chairs to sit in and get little snacks to make the process go quicker. The did wonderfully and the process was very quick. You can also go with the first haircut package which gets you a little picture and a lock of the cute curls you are hesitant to get rid of. :) It's a great little keepsake and I wasn't even sentimental about the first cut but really am glad I have it.

I've always cut my own kids hair, but I usually use clippers with an attachment. I've asked stylists though when I've had my hair done and most places have somebody who does a little better with small kids and keeping them comfortable. If you call anywhere to make an appointment, just make sure you ask for whoever does that best and make it for the quietest time of their day.

If you think your son will have the patience to sit there while you cut his hair, it will be cheaper for you to do it. My son HATES getting his hair cut, so we have always taken him to Snipits. We tried a beauty salon, but many of them don't have regular little ones coming in. They take their time, talk to you, etc. Snipits is an in and out process! They know that my son will only sit still without getting antsy or crying for so long, so within 5-10 minutes (depending on how much hair he has), they are done! They also throw on a Snipits movie, give them animal crackers to eat during the cut, and give them a prize at the end. Hope this helps!

We took our son to the same barber that my husband sees. I would ask where you get your haircut if they do kid's hair as well.

I have personally had good experiences with our local barber shops. But, we live in a small town, and, are used to many small children and babies coming in. They are great.
