To Be New Mom Looking for Pediatrician W/ Both Medical & Holistic Viewpoint

I'm about to have my first child and I'm just now learning about the controversy over the CDC's childhood immunization schedule and how it may be a factor in the rise of autism and other neurological disorders. I am faced with many questions regarding whether or not to hold off on immunizations and if I should follow a more friendly immunization schedule. I have not yet chosen a pediatrician yet and would love to get recommendations on ones that utilize both medical and holistic research so I can get some unbiased guidance in this area.

L.,
I went through this same dilemma. My child was a preemie and we already had so many issues with breastfeeding and just surviving that I didn't want to deal with a sick newborn because of shots and everything. I asked the same question online and 16 women referred me to Dr. Deborah Z. Bain at Healthy Kids Pediatrics in Frisco. She is a drive for me, but worth it. She's a breast cancer survivor which is why she became so holistic and natural. Still, she believes in mainstream stuff as far as it is beneficial. She is a great mix of the two. She doesn't cover medicaid, but does cover most major insurances. Good luck--drop me an e-mail if you have any more questions. Good luck with everything!

We use Dr. Chartrand in Allen and he is WONDERFUL!! I had lots of questions and he spent about an hour with me just in "consult" prior to even using him as a doctor. Kids love him and now tons of our friends are using him. He is great!!

I'm glad you still plan to give immunizations, though just on a different schedule. I know a neighbor young mom with polio, and it is a horendous and totally preventable disease.
While you're researching the autism connection, be sure to also look at the articles showing that the mercury connection was first determined by a very faulty study of a very small sampling of kids, and later was shown to not have true medical merit.

Hi L. - I noticed you are in Garland. I live in Rowlett and interviewed several pedis in the area before my son was born last January. I was very disappointed in what I found around us. I did get some good recommendations for doctors in Dallas (Baylor and Medical City), but I didn't want to have to drive downtown and then pay to park and walk a ways to the office. I finally chose Dr. Thai Hoang in Frisco. I decided that, yes, it is a drive from my house, but I'd rather jump on the Toll roads and park right in front of his door than go downtown. I have not regretted my decision. We love Dr. Thai!! He is so wonderful with our son and spends so much time with us answering all questions and concerns. We are on a delayed vaccine schedule. Dr. Thai does follow the normal schedule, but does not put any pressure on parents that want to delay. I have really appreciated his conversations with me about which ones he feels are most important at the time.
Oh - and he also sees my neice (that's where I got the recommendation). He was on vacation last summer when her blood results came back showing she had a blood disorder and he spent so much time on the phone setting up appts with a hemotologist at Children's and assuring my sister. My family is so thankful to have such a wonderful pedi!!
Good luck in your search!!

My pediatrician is Dr. Deborah Bain in Frisco. I don't have her phone number but her practice is called Healthy Kids Pediatrics. I haven't immunized my two children yet and she nevers asks me to. She was on the 10'o clock news talking about her alternate schedule for shots. She trys to heal from within w/o always given antibiotics. A great doctor.

Hello we have used Dr. Chartrand. Since he doesn't file insurance papers and leaves it up to his patients, his fees are extremely reasonable. This worked for us. His office visit rate is $65.00, additional fees are added if needed such as blood work, etc. I have heard good things of Dr. Blain but she was too expensive for us for just a wellness check up. May God bless you and guide you in your decision.

L., I see you received a lot of responses. I'm looking for a doctor for adults w/both Medical & holistic viewpoint. Do you know of one? I have tried different doctors friends have referred me too, but they didn't impress me as being holistic at all. I want preventative care with holistic means, but if need be then medicines.

First of all, congratulations on the upcoming birth of your first baby...your blessings are just beginning! This is some advice (take it, or not...) from a Mom/Grandmother, and retired School Nurse. While you have time looking for a Pedi, don't be afraid to ask questions...call the office, set up an appt., talk to the nurse, find out about what the policy etc. about immunizations, etc. Of course, you know that some of the immunizations are non-negotiable, but the time-table for the administration is. The jury is still out about the autism connection (believe me, I've done my homework here, because of the state requirements for immunizations at school). "Some" connection has been made about having lots of immunizations administered at the same time, rather that spread out more (that is something you can certainly ask the Dr. about. I would NOT, however, withhold immunizations altogether. World travel, and people immigrating from third world countries to the US having had NO immunizations are bringing long irradicated diseases back to this country. Of course the final decision is up to you and your Dr., but I wouldn't want to take that chance. Happy Baby! God bless you.
