Tivo

I am looking for feedback on Tivo. My husband and I like to watch a few TV shows, but we don't watch any TV until after the kids have gone to bed for the night. This means we might miss our favorite shows. We are considering a Tivo to record shows and watch them on our schedule. Has anyone used Tivo before? Is it a good service? Worth the money?

What can I do next?

We have had both a dvr and a tivo. love them both for the reason you list. both work the same. haven't watched a commercial since, which also makes the recording device a very good time efficiency tool.

OMG - LOVE the Tivo! We have regular cable and a Tivo and it is so wonderful. We couldn't live without it. We also don't watch many shows, but it nice to have the few that we do watch available when we want them. We also Tivo movies when they show up, so we can watch them at our leisure and fast forward any commercials. Plus, if you like reruns of certain shows (my favs are Law and Order, American Justice, other crime shows :) you can set it up to record those and watch them any time. Perhaps the best part for me, as a stay at home mom, is the ability to record certain kids shows for my son and only watch them when I think it's a good time to do so. We record educational shows, like Sesame Street and Word World (PBS) and he can watch these particular shows with permission at any time of the day, rather than having to sit down at exactly 9 to watch Sesame Street (or miss it). Anyway, once you go Tivo, you'll never go back!

Tivo is one of the greatest things! You can set it up to record all the new shows so you don't miss any and when watching it you can fast forward through the commercials. Now that I have it I don't think I will ever be without it. Well worth the money!

We have AT&T's U-Verse service with the DVR (Tivo). We absolutely love it!!! It is the best invention:) I think it's definitely worth the money. We use it for the same reason you are talking about; after we put our son to bed my husband and I watch our recorded programs.

we have a DVR through the cable company and will never give it up. We can record shows that aren't kid friendly to watch later and speed through commercials. Totally worth it!

We have several shows that we watch regularly, and our DVR gave us our lives back! We were always missing shows because of activities with the kids, meetings, etc... and I hated rushing though a meal so that we wouldn't miss a show. It's awesome just setting it to record and watching it when you want to, I could never go back!

Awesome, awesome, awesome!! We have Direct TV with DVR instead of Tivo and it is very worth it!! And if you get interrupted by "life", you just pause it or rewind live tv! I highly recommend it. We bundle through Qwest so it's a little cheaper...yes...get it!! And if you get it you should get my account # to give them so I get $50.00 and you do too! :)

We have a DVR through our cable company. I got it for the exact same reason. Usually I was watching TV later at night and didn't enjoy the stuff that was on, so I would watch shows from earlier in the day, week, or month that I had missed because it was bedtime when it was originally on.

I've never had Tivo and have no idea of the costs compared to getting a DVR through your cable or satellite company.

We have DVR, which is basically the same thing as Tivo. LOVE IT!!!! It has made the bedtime routine so much better b/c sometimes the older one would still be awake at 9:00 (despite being in bed by about 8:30) and come out and want one of us to lay with her again for a few minutes; now we either record our shows or pause them. Wish we would have done this sooner. Plus, now we can watch our shows in less time b/c we forward through the commercials!

No it's not worth the money. You can have a "tivo-like" service with your regular cable company. It's called digital cable and it allows you to record shows just like tivo. The great thing is you don't have to have extra equipment or pay a separate bill. You just have to pay about $10 extra on your cable bill. It's great! Call your local cable company and see what is available. We have ours through Time Warner and it's really good!

We don't watch tv anymore. We watch all of our shows on the internet.

All the networks have their shows online and Hulu has fox, nbc, Sci-Fi, Comedy Central and soon abc.

Netflix has CSI, CSI:NY and Numbers... I think it has CSI:Miami but I don't watch it.

Netflix is $8.99/mo for unlimited watching online and 1 dvd at a time.

Hulu is free.

Of course our computer is hooked up to our 42" plasma so I guess we do watch our tv, it's just as a computer monitor. Best purchases we ever made.

Oh my god! You have to get TIVO!! I swear it will change your life! Really...no more stress over mising part of your tv show because one of the kids is getting out of bed....just hit pause. When I had my 2nd son, I had 4 episodes of Lost and Survivor Tivo'd so when I had to get up every 2 hours to feed him it was actually a treat because I would nurse while I caught up on my shows. It is the best!!

Do you have comcast or directv? If you do, I would go with their option of DVR. I have heard mixed reviews on the tivo. Many people I have known have dealt with the machine burning out and then you are out that money and have to buy a new one. If that were to happen with comcast or directv, they replace it because you are renting the machine and not purchasing it.

Tivo is a godsend!!!!!! You can watch tv on your time. We have had it now for about 4 years and I can't imagine ever living with out it.

Do sign up for the lifetime membership service - when we signed up it was $300 up front but then you don't pay a monthly service fee. It seemed pricey at first but it is very nice to not pay monthly and we have totally gotten our money out of the service.

I don't watch tons of shows either - but it's nice to have them saved for a rainy day or when you have time.

I'd say do it - we love it!

We have "DVR" through our cable provider, but its the same thing. My husband was totally against it and 5 minutes into having it he was addicted.

I dvr all the shows i miss because he's watching baseball, he records his cooking shows and we record lot's of stuff for our 18mo old son...it's awesome!!! You never have to worry about not being able to watch what you want again!

We have had our Tivo for 3 years now. We LOVE it. It feels weird to go to someone else's house and not be able to pause the TV during a conversation, lol.

We pay $12.95 a month for the service and have had our dual tuner box for 3 years.

Hi K.,

My response is not 100% what you're wanting to know because we don't have the actual Tivo service. We do have, however, DVR with our satellite provider, which is basically the same thing, and we absolutely LOVE it! Instead of watching things we're not really that interested in because they're not on at convenient times, we only watch what we really like, and it takes about half to three-quarters of the time to watch a program so it's a time-saver also. We're pretty big sports fans, and even if we're home when a show comes on, we usually let it start recording for a little while before we start watching because it takes so much less time. Another thing that's really nice is we set it up to tape a couple of shows that our 5-year-old really likes, and we have instant access to several Mickey Mouse episodes, for example. I don't know how much Tivo costs, but the extra $5 we pay on our satellite bill is definitely worth it to me. We actually just switched to Dish Network and are paying around $40 for hook-ups to three TVs, DVR (able to record two shows at one time). If you don't have cable or satellite and just want the recording management, I'm sure Tivo would be very comprable to DVR, very easy, well worth the money. If you have cable or satellite, it would probably be cheaper to just add the recording service to that. Our family very highly recommends DVR to anyone because it's so easy, great time saver, and we don't go out, just the two of us, very much so spending $5 a month on entertainment is pretty cheap! Have a great (hopefully cooler soon) summer!

we don't have TiVO, but we have DVR thru DirecTV... which is pretty much the most amazing invention EVER!!! I can't imagine living without it. It's 4.99 a month, and we can record 2 shows at a time. The crappy part about Satalite is you pay per room that you have a box in, BUT something they didn't tell me was that all the rooms can have a DVR box... and it's still only a 4.99 fee doesn't matter if you have 7 tv's.

also, other than getting to watch the shows I want to when I want to, it works great if your kid is watching tv then you want them to do something else instead just tell them you will record it and they can finish it later. :) always works for my daughter.

If you do get TiVo, make sure to get the one with a DUAL receiver. That way you can record one show and be watching something else at the same time. We made the mistake of getting the single receiver and had to return it for the dual receiver which is what we wanted in the first place.

Cost wise you might look into what your cable or satellite service offers for DVR. It may be cheaper then getting separate service from TiVo. Either way it's really a awesome thing to have!!!
