My son is having this surgery on Monday. I know it is a pretty common surgery but I HATE the thought of him going under anesthesia and having surgery at all. I'm a nervous wreck.

Has anyone had to do this with their son? Anything I should know/expect?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate it. Some great suggestions (pacifier - duh! hadn't even crossed my mind) and I appreciate the validation from everyone. You guys are right it is probably much harder on me than him. I'm sooo glad to know about them being kind of bound to the bed - I probably would have freaked if I had not known about that ahead of time.

Yes this is a hypospadius surgery.

Thank you so much! I can't wait until Tuesday when this is all over.

Not the same surgery, but my son had surgery at 6 months for an undescended testicle due to a hernia. We were also going to circumcise him at the same time, but my gut was screaming "no" about that, so we called it off that morning. Once we made that change, I was much more calm about the whole surgery idea. He did great and you never would have guessed he had an operation an hour after it was over. I nursed him as soon as he woke from anesthesia, we brought him home and gave him his pain meds, just in case for the first 2 days, but as far as he was concerned, he might as well have been at the park that morning.
Try to stay calm and trust that he'll be ok.
Good luck!

My son had two similar surgeries, at 4 weeks and 15 months. He had a ureterocel. In any case, it was much harder on me than on him. 8 months is a good age for surgery.

Hang in there and try not to worry too much.

He will be fine. They come thru these things with flying colors. Pediatric anesthesiologist s are incredible. He might be a little cranky for a few minutes when he wakes up, but then it is full speed ahead. Kids are not like adults. Good luck.

My son had surgery (twice) at a young age for a clogged tear duct that would not correct itself.

Bring a favorite lovey item (stuffed animal or blanket) for before and after. If he has a favorite pacifier bring that as well.

For afterwards, have a bottle with some water or breastmilk/formula for him to have when he wakes up if the doctor allows it. Mine suggested it since they don't get to eat beforehand. My child was crying and quite cranky when he woke up. But, once we got him outside, he was a lot better. I'm not sure if your son's surgery requires him to stay overnight or not, but my son's was in and out. So once we got the okay that he was ready to go home, getting him outside greatly improved his mood.

If it is a one-day thing, when you get him home, keep an eye on him when he plays, particularly if he likes to pull up to a standing position. His balance will be off for a while, but he won't really understand that and will try to do the same activities he usually does.

They bounce back pretty fast. Mine was at early walking age so we had to keep him off the hard floors or walk behind him when he first got home because he had a tendency to fall over from lack of balance. After a few hours though, he was more back to normal with respect to balance.
