I feed my daugther 2-3 times in the highchair every day. Recently she has started sucking her thumb instead of eating at the high chair. Some times she'll pull her thumb out then when she sees the spoon going towards her she sticks her thumb back in. I don't think that this is a sign that seh doens't like the food, cause she does it with her favorite foods as well. I have tried to not feed her anything but a bottle for a couple of days and when we went back to highchair feedings it went well for the for the first couple of feedings then the behavior started again. I tried giving her a toy to play with, but then she gets too interested in that and stops eating, or it occupies her for a few minutes then she starts sucking her thumb again. I am getting frustrated with this, it is becoming hard to feed her. I usually pull her thumb out then stick the spoon in. Some times she'll pull her thumb out when she sees the spoon near her, sometims she fights me and wont pull her thumb out. Has any one else had this problem? Is this normal? Do I just keep pulling her thumb out or are there any other tricks to get her to stop?

So What Happened?

my mom said that I used to do it as well... so maybe its just one of those things. She is cutting teeth, and I do give her finger foods, and she doesn't do it then, but she plays more with ehr food then she eats it (she doens't have the pincher down very well). She isnt' that sleepy, she sucks her thumb at random times. She is pretty good about taking it out when food is coming... I guess I will just bear with it lol. I felt her gums this mornign she IS getting a tooth through. I saw her gums were swollen and felt and i can feel the sharpness off the tooth!!!! YaY!

My daughter did the same thing last month when she cut her first 2 teeth. She had never sucked her thumb before, so it surprised us. She only did it at dinnertime, and it was hard to get her to eat, too. I found 2 ways that worked to help get her fed. First, I distracted her with some of those puff finger foods that melt and slipped the food in while she was opening to down those. Then I tried chilling her food. That worked best. She actually kind of liked eating again and did not put up as big a battle. I also found out from the doctor that she was going through a slow-down in her growth and that she was probably just not as hungry as I was used to. (Her whole jar of food was dwindling to 1/2 a jar at times). Overall, I would say try the chilled baby food. Oh! and giving her a sippy cup of chilled water helped, too. She did just kind of play with it, but I think the cold felt good on her gums and helped her eat. Good luck! (PS_ She stopped it after the teeth came in, if that gives you any hope.)

My daughter is a card-carrying thumb-sucker, but she's only ever done it when she's sleepy. Is your daughter a little sleepy during feedings? With a bottle, she would suck DURING her feeding, so feedings served a dual purpose. Being fed with a spoon eliminates that, so maybe she's tired enough to prefer comfort over sustenance?

Hum, either she has found her thumb for comfort or she is possibly cutting some teeth and it rubbing on her gums is helping with the pressure. Is this the only time she does it, when you go to feed her? Maybe try to give her a bit of oral gel about 5 mins before you put her in the chair or teething tablets about 15 mins before. And see if she stops doing it. If not, then try not to make a big deal about it with her cause then she'll just start doing it because she'll like that she gets a reaction out of you be it good or bad. And maybe after the thrill is gone she'll stop it all together.

Good luck!

Have you tried giving her finger foods and letting her feed herself?
