10 Month Old No Longer Eating

When I first began feeding my daughter solids(around 6 months) she loved it and would not refuse anything I gave her. She was so easy to feed and really enjoyed eating. Now she is 10 months old and is not wanting to eat solids anymore. She begins to cry when I put her in her highchair and turns her head every time I try to feed her. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong or how I can handle this?

What can I do next?

My daughter who is now 11 months did the same thing at 10 mths. She hated for me to feed her mainly because she wants to feed herself. If she has teeth, maybe start giving her stuff like gerber meat sticks or soft chopped up veggies that she can feed herself. I also started giving her lunchables and things like that. I hope that this helps.

Give her the spoon and let her make a wonderful mess :) Also you can try some soft finger foods that she can easily feed herself.

Hi. My son is about to be 12 months old. He started doing something similar around the same age as your daughter. What I discovered is that he was wanting to feed himself. I bought some of the Gerber Graduates carrot pieces in a jar and he loved them! They are soft so if she doesn't have many or any teeth she should be able to smash them with her tongue. Also, we give him... well we call them "puffs". Its the Gerber and Parents choice puffed fruit pieces that melt in their mouth but helps them learn to chew more solid pieces of food. I hope this advice helps!

hi. i am a mom of 2 girls and a pediatric occupational therapist with training in feeding issues. are you feeding your child stage 3 foods? if so, stop. stage 3 foods are very confusing to babies because they are used to stage 2 foods which are purees. stage 3 foods are purees with chunks in them. so babies are used to sucking the food off the spoon and when they do that they suck a chunk down and gag. it is very confusing. instead try table foods like mashed potatoes, soft pastas, avacados, bananas, etc...start by mashing them well, then over time give them slightly thicker pieces. if your issue is not stage 3 foods, i would have to know more about what it is going on at mealtime to help. best wishes.

my daughter is 10 months too and she has started doing the same thing...she only wants formula and those fruit puffs by gerber. and i remember my oldest never really wanted to eat anything at all...she only wanted to "drink" her meals, so she was mainly on formula till about 11months or so.

i have given up trying to force my kid to eat, she crys every time i put her in the high chair until i hand her a bottle or sippy and some fruit puffs. don't worry, i've finally accepted that my kid will tell me when she's hungry. its probably just a phase. trust me, a child will tell you when they are hungry and will eat when they want too. just keep offering some of her fav foods and maybe try to let her feed herself with some finger foods. my 10mo old doesn't want jar food anymore, which makes it tough cause she still has no teeth. but i dice up like bananas or super soft carrots or pears into little pick up peices and she loves it. good luck.

My son is now 14 months but started this same thing around 10 or 11 months. We figured it out that he just didn't want to be fed by us anymore. He wants to do it himself. So I started giving him the graduate meals or food that I cook for the family. I just give him a little at a time with a baby fork and let him go to town. Dealing with the mess later is way easier than dealing with him screaming and refusing food. His weight gain is getting much better and he is sleeping better and is not as fussy. Hope this might help you. I know how aggrivated you must be. Good luck.

Hee i go again with having a Daycre. when one of my Babes would not eat (just like your little one. ) I would give her finger food to eat. But believe me , when she gets hungry , she will eat. maybe she looks at the other children and sees you do not feed them and she does not want you to feed her. At that age they like to do just what everyone else does. Mammajack

My son is also 10 months and is doing the same thing. Sometimes he will eat 2-3 Stage 2 jars and sometimes he won't eat 1/2 of one. He shakes his head "no", pushes my hand away, and whines. I tried mixing the food together as he has decided that he is on a veggie strike which seems to help. I think it is probably a phase though and wouldn't worry too much as long as she is taking her formual or nursing fine. They are still getting their main source of nutrition from BM/formula. HTH.

ok not being a doc or anything just a mom with lots of experience... the first rule of thumb all babies are different no situation is the same.... what works of one may not work for another......frustration is gonna be the name of the game for the next 3 years.....grain of salt or try if you will

if the baby cries when you put her in the high chair then dont. put her in her walker or in her swing or let her crawl around and come to you when she wants a bite of food. you have to get creative when it comes to children they get bored easily and the littlest thing can scare them and throw off the routine.

it sounds as if your little one is just testing the waters and for you its going to be a little harder then say myself to figure out what is going on cuz there is more then one chief in the babies life ( meaning the child care provider) it could be that the childcare provider has done something different and the baby likes that when you go to feed her you dont do the same thing and she wants nothing to do with your feeding time. its normal it happens its no big deal. and no im not takin a stab at you working i think mothers that work are strong and very determined they make it all work home family and career.

and finally if he is gaining weight every pediatrian will tell you it is normal as long as he/she is gaining weight dont worry so much about it just keep trying to get they to eat and in time they will.

You might want to try starting her on finger foods. It's a bit early, but she may be wanting to feed herself at this point. My sixteen-month-old son does the same thing.

If nothing else is out of the ordinary...no fever...not teething....I would switch back to formula and rice cereal for a few days. Then start again. Reintroduce the foods...one at a time...for a couple of days. By doing that one food for a few days you can tell if that is the food she does not like or is having a problem with. She may have a food allergy. This will help you narrow it down, it will also keep your child nourished. If this still does not help a trip to the doctor, or health department may be needed. Also, when I had my first one, I called my mom and doctor's office all the time with questions. They don't mind. The nurse usually has some good ideas and often times helped me avoid the costly trip to the doctor. My kids are way past that age, but, I remember them too going through picky phases. It drove me nuts with worry. But, they out grew this and went on to grow nicely.

Mine does that too. She is 16 months, but started that a long time ago. I don't do anything. I don;t force or push. I just wait it out until she gets hungry. Just make sure you give her vitamins in her bottle.

Also another thing that we realized is that if she hasn't gone to the bathroom and had a good BM then she doesn't eat well. She really eats in spurts. After a good BM she will usually eat well.
Also if her teeth are bothering her she won't eat well either.
I think that is just one of those mommy things that you have to be patient with. Just don't forget to give her the vitamins. She will be fine.

It's perfectly normal for babies to grow through this phase. My son ate really well and then tapered off. He's one now and some days he eats really well and other days he barely eats at all. I don't worry too much because he still nurses about 6 times a day. He went through a stage where the only thing we could get him to eat was fruit. Try just feeding her fruit and cereal. Or maybe yogurt. But don't worry too much. If you're concerned she's not getting enough nutrition call the pediatrician and ask about supplementing with vitamins. Hope this helps.

Your daughter could be teething. My baby did the same thing, and everytime she begins teething, she stops eating well and a lot of the times that is the only indication that she is teething.

There are any number of reasons why your baby won't eat. My son, who just turned 11 months, went through a phase like that. And he still does. In his case, he was wanting a bottle first to stave off the hunger, then he'd be okay with eating some finger foods. He goes back and forth between wanting to feed himself and wanting to be fed. He loves cereal and string cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches, but he won't pick up veggies or fruit.

It may be that your baby's getting restless and doesn't want to be in a high chair, or it may be she's finding eating stressful. Don't push her - as long as she's at least getting formula/breastmilk, she's getting the nutrients she needs. Maybe take a couple days off, while still offering solids periodicaly through the day to see if she wants them.

Try some fruits and veggies to make sure she gets nutrients. Its difficult to say what to feed her because all children are different. So, try my first suggestion then for Breakfast, oatmeal, cream of wheat, grits, toddlers toast, Lunc: jar chicken, beef ( combos) cheese & crackers, peanut butter & jelly,. good luck

She may have something hurting her gums. I would let the dentist or her pediatrician take a look at her mouth and see if she has an absess or something that makes it uncomfortable for her to eat solids.

Bridgett,
I am not a doctor or a therapist so you can take this with a grain of salt, but I would just stop solids for 1-2 weeks or so to see if it will pass. She may just be telling you she needs a break. Try to make sure you never make her feel like you are forcing her to eat or do anything that would make her associate something negative (like punishment, or being tense) with eating. IF it doesn't pass you will need to see her ped. or a speech therapist. My son saw a speech therapist for about 2 years and they have a lot of tricks to make eating fun again!

She could be wanting to self feed some and eat some soft solids that she can eat by herself (soft, cooked veggies, puffs, cheerios, etc.). My daughter is very independent (unlike my son was when he was her age), and wanted to feed herself from early on.

My daughter also developed opinions about food about the same age (or a little after) that your daughter is. She used to eat anything with no trouble, but then decided she only liked fruit for a while. So, I would mix her veggies/dinners in with fruit so I would trick her into eating them! ;)

I would try finding something she likes to eat, or trying a bit of solids (snack or otherwise) she can feed herself and see if that helps. Good luck!

She is just acting like a young baby. Babies do that, they do strange things, & we don't know what to do. But, in your case, go back to the baby food. In time, she will want to have the Solids.
