I have 3 year old who has been sucking her thumb since she was 2 months. I wanted to know if there is anyway I can get her to stop sucking her thumb. I am open to any advice or suggestions.

What can I do next?

Hi I have a 4 year old that is getting ready for kindergarden and I didnt want him to suck his thumb in school, he also has an overbite and a lisp from sucking his thumb. I got this nailpolish type stuff that is for nailbiters and thumbsuckers taht you paint on their nails and it tase very bitter. it worked in two days, he hasnt put his thumb in his mouth for over a month.

I had three of my kids suck their thumbs. My now 12 yr old sucked his thumb until he was about five, he gave it up by himself. My twin girls, now 9, didn't give it up so readily. When they were about 6 I actually talked to them about it. At that age I was able to give them ideas on how to fall asleep without sucking on it. The one that worked the best was for them to fall asleep with their hands under their pillows.

I will tell you that my three older kids have no problems with their teeth or anything.

Hi M.,
I am trying to discourage my 19 month old from thumb sucking. She is doing very well, but will suck her thumb when she is tired. I just ask her to take her fingers out of her mouth. Sometimes, I have to ask about 10 times consecutively, but eventually she removes it. Then, lots of praise about being a big girl. I don't like to force her, I rather she removes her thumb herself, but sometimes if she won't listen I will gently wiggle her arm and tell her again.

Start working now, it is so hard on them when they get too old and are still hooked on thumb sucking. Just like everything else, a lot of talking.

Good Luck.
C.
