Thought 8 Year Old Was over Stomach Bug--throwing up Again, Common?

Usually when my kids get a stomach bug they are out for 24 hours and that is it. My 8 year old spent 24 hours sick, throwing up and general bug symptoms. Then nothing for 30 hours, felt pretty good and then cramps hit again and he threw up. Poor guy! Has this happened to your kiddos where they seem to be better and relapse?

Also, I took him to the docot yesterday because there was a small amount of blood in his vomit. The doc said it was probably from the irritation of throwing up so much. I think there might have been a tiny amount in the vomit tonight. Does this happen with your kiddos?

What can I do next?

sure. relapses are very common. his system was exhausted from getting over the bug and susceptible to getting whammied again.
poor little fella. keep him quiet, and on a gentle diet, and he'll be haring around again in no time.

Sometimes that happens. He just wasn't all the way over it, and probably felt better (by comparison), ate or did too much, and got another round of it. OR, because he was already in a weakened state, he picked up a second bug from someone else (even someone who didn't have symptoms). Sometimes the bug works its way further down and they diarrhea after the throwing up part has passed. Push the fluids, do the BRAT diet for another 24-36 hours, and keep him relatively quiet. Sorry he's feeling poorly but I wouldn't worry.

Just thought I'd mention, a friend of mine has a young daughter and something similar happened to her. Does your son have a fever? If so, you may want to get him tested for Strep. Strep doesn't always show itself with a sore throat.

I would try and do small amounts/sips of liquid. Advance his diet slowly. Sounds like his poor tummy is very irritated.

Yes, this does happen. My daughter once had a bug but vomited only one time and did not vomit for another 23 hours-- then in hour 24,when you figure "Hooray, this is done," she vomited one more time. So another 24 had to pass before she was clear. The pediatrician told me at that time that it's quite common for some viruses to still be in the system when we think they're past.

Do monitor any further vomit for blood, though it does sound as if it might indeed be irritation. Be sure that every single thing he tries to get down is not acidic in any way -- no juices of any kind, no milk or any dairy products (hard to digest). Keep an eye on his hydration if vomiting continues. Older kids sometimes say "I'm not thirsty" because they think they aren't, but they don't realize the MUST take in fluids when sick even if they are reluctant or associate the fluids with vomiting it up again. Take care that he doesn't refuse fluids on the basis of not feeling thirsty or because he fears it will make him vomit. He doesn't realize he could end up with an IV in his arm getting rehydrated the hard way. Hope he feels better soon.

Yes, just before Christmas--except without any blood. My 3 yr old was sick. Threw up one day, was down that day and then fine for a couple days. Then he got sick again for a day. He was afraid to eat because he thought he would throw up again, we had to force him to eat but light stuff.

What did he eat? I find that after throwing up for a day or two I can only tolerate very bland food for a while, like the BRAT diet, and only in very small quantities. If I try to eat like normal then I would start to throw up again.

Yes, that has happened with mine, minus the small spots of blood.

I find that with any virus there can be a relapse if there isn't proper rest even after symptoms are gone. Kids love to get right back into rough housing and running around with their friends, but I think the body is still fighting off remnants of the virus internally for a couple days after feeling better, so it's good to ease them back in slowly, especially with stomach viruses :)

Did your doctor give any instructions if there continues to be vomiting with blood? Hope he feels better soon!
