Themes for Decorating a Children's Clubhouse

I have an idea for a Christmas present for my daughters (almost 8 and 4). I want to transform a walk-in closet into a "clubhouse" for them. I am probably crazy, since it is a nice big closet, but I sort of feel the need to purge, and I also know how much I would have loved this as a child. They have a play area, so I am not really interested in storing toys, but just making a fun cozy area they can play in. The closet is about 4' x 6' I have a few ideas:

* hanging a fun little sparkly or beaded chandelier
* using chalkboard or whiteboard paint on a wall
* getting a couple big beanbags to sit on or a kids "couch"
* putting up some inspirational sayings on the wall with decals about being a girl
* making a clubhouse sign for the door

I am looking for some ideas for a theme. I don’t want to be too childish so they will enjoy it for a while, but they aren't anywhere near being teens yet, so I don’t want it too grown up. I thought about painting a fake window or doing a garden and clouds theme. Or even just bright geometric shapes and some glow in the dark decals. But I don't love these ideas so I need inspiration!!
I may ask the kids to draw a picture of a clubhouse for me, but that may not help too much since I do want it to be a surprise and don’t want to let on too much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks!! This has been really helpful. I am leaning toward neutral. the reason I didnt' like my ideas is because I would like to be neutral enough that they can use their imaginations and grow with it - as opposed to always treating it like a playhouse or a garden for pretending. I love the Moroccon color scheme - it would be bright and sparkly and I also like the Eiffle Tower/Great Wall idea. I actually wanted to do one of the girls' nursery as an "around the world" theme. But I couldn't find anything soft and soothing... So this would be a great way to focus on that.

I also like the idea of savign some of the "work" for them. I am thinking I will maybe paint and buy furniture, but give them a bucnhof stuff to decorate it themselves so they can make it their own. THanks!!!

These are all amazing ideas, but I STRONGLY suggest that you give them the tools to do these things, all boxed up, and do it together, or even let them do a mural themselves on one wall.

I've noticed a trend. The clubhouse gets a lot more time and attention from the kids if they do the work themselves. It's also a great time to use the experience to teach life lessons about safety, friendship, preparation, foresight (are you going to like this in two years?), etc.

Good luck! And this is a GREAT idea that I am thinking of using for my boys!!!

Uh...the closet clubhouse, not the sparkly chandelier! ;o)

What about Girl's Rock (with fun guitars etc) or Girl Power! You can incorporate their favorite colors!

I saw a makeover show once where they did a Genie In A Bottle theme. It was simple. Lots of hanging panels of sheer fabric in pinks and purples. A hanging moroccan lantern looking chandelier. Tons of big jewel toned pillows to sit and lay on were layed ontop of a "Magic Carpet" (oriental rug). They had found a chest of drawers that had a curved shape to it, to represent the bottle. They painted it a bright turquoise color and replaced all the dawer pulls with jeweled ones. If you could find something like that, you could use it to store art supplies and things they might want to keep in the clubhouse. That would be a cool spot to bring thier friends as they transition to tweens and teens

I am jealous - I wish we had the extra closet space - what a great idea!!! What about a "reading will take you to great places" kind of theme. You could have a space/moon theme on a wall or the Eiffel Tower or Great Wall of China and various animals, ANYTHING! Maybe you can pick some things they like to read about or some favorites along with some new fun things. Then I would put in bean bags or other small kids chairs and a shelf with/for books, one or two reading sconces (hang on the wall)... Maybe go to a local library or nice book store and get some ideas on how they have created some nice reading spaces. I would have LOVED a cozy book nook when I was little!

I LOVE the ideas you already have!! Can you add a desk in there too? That's something they could grow into. I love that idea of asking them to draw their dream clubhouse... Or even ask them to make a list of their 10 favorite things, and incorporate those as well :)

I wish I had the extra space! Have a fun time!! :)

Ah man, lucky girls! I had a girlfriend growing up whose mom did the same thing with a storage closet under their stairs. I was always so envious and LOVED playing at their house. I remember it being done in a very girly way but pretty. The walls were white but I remember two circle mirrors side by side with pretty dolls sitting on shelves next to them. They had a HUGE barbie house in there with everything barbie. So I guess not much o fa specific theme per se, but it was filled with dolls as that is what they (and me!) loved playing with. Sorry, not much help was I?
