The Puppy That Hates Grooming

I have a new puppy who happens to have long fur and could be beautiful, but hates to be groomed. Is there a good way to get her to enjoy the grooming process? Right now, she either tries to eat the brush or attempts an escape. I've been gentle with her and brushed her in spurts of a few seconds at a time, but she just doesn't seem to be taking to it. My other dogs love being brushed so I'm at a loss.

What can I do next?

I agree with the other poster try putting her on the dryer with a non-slip mat and try using positive reinforcement both verbally and with treats (lots of treats!!) until she get more and more used to it. Also work with her feet, not only playing with them but using a nail file and filing each nail a little that way she will be used to people messing with the actual toe nail. If you want and she will let you, you can also clip just the tips off of each nail. The younger you begin these things with them the better they will be the older they get!!!

Hope this helps you

With our Husky we had to get a "rake" brush for her since she has an under coat and the brush won't pull at her but it gently pulls the loose undercoat out. This makes her happy and she sits still while brushing her!

Remember to keep a quiet voice and move slowly so your puppy does not get startled. I would suggest brush for just a few minutes then pet and play then brush again. This way the puppy is getting used to it with out being too scared. And yes treats are ALWAYS welcome with puppies! The less going on around them while you do this the better! Good Luck!

Our old dog was a lhasa apso. He was crazy at first about getting groomed, so I set him up in our laundry room. I bought a cheap bathroom rug (with no-slip backing) and threw that on the dryer, then put him up there and kept a good hold while I brushed and eventually shaved him. Not having as many distractions, and not being able to get loose as easily made a big difference. Plus the cheese at the end of each session didn't hurt either!

Best of luck to you and your new puppy. :)
