The Party of NO

...is going on at our house!

Forgive the political pun - it was all I could think about while that word was all I was hearing today!

LO is in a phase where when he gets cranky, all he says is "no".

"Do you want some milk?" "No"
"Some water?" "....yes..."
* hands him cup *
*pushes it away * "NOOOOOO" (w/real tears)

He'll grab me to come up, then I pick him up and he wants down immediately. "noooooo"

sigh.

Tonight I figured out that it's because he has about 4 more teeth trying to push through, but what do you do when your toddler does this? He is obviously upset and wants something, but the answer is always no.

He usually responds well to "Sweetie, we don't whine, we use words. Tell mommy what you want", but not today. As luck would have it, some baby Tylenol and nice cool grapes did the trick. =D

What do you do?

PS: He's a great sleeper and still naps between 2-4 hours a day. I should have mentioned he woke up this way from a 3.5 hour nap. You KNOW it's going to be a long afternoon when they wake up that way! Usually he's nice and refreshed, happy and cuddly. Not today...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The evening ended well, between Tylenol, a good dinner, and some time outside in the dirt. =) This is a hard time between teething and language development, but he is really doing well with the latter - he definitely knows what he wants and it seems to be a big motivator for him to pick up words.

He's also fairly easily re-directed, thank goodness!

Thanks for your insights!

Ugh- I hate that stage! I think it's one of those things you just have to get through- some days seem better than others. Sounds like you're doing a great job- just keep doing what you're doing =o)

I remember those days, with my own and some daycare kids. They just cant help themselves when the teeth hurt and they get cranky and they want you to hold them to fix it but the instant you pick them up they realize it didnt help and want down to fix it, and down doesnt help either. What a miserable time for the little guys. I found it helped if I swooped them up and danced around with them in my arms, with music or not, just sway and dip and turn and hold them tight, and it takes their mind off the teeth and sometimes, when they need a nap, it help put them to sleep better. So hold him and dance slow and sing into his ear softly, and soothe the pain away.

Love him with all your heart! If he's in pain, he's likely cranky, so just try to be as compassionate and empathetic as possible. I promise this will pass before you know it, and you'll forget all about it!

Sounds like you are already doing great!!!

He may be teething... but this is also what a Toddler does when they are over-tired.
He needs a nap or to get more sleep.

Hi amy-

Maybe make it a 'forced' choice...

"would you like water OR milk?"

Have him say (or point...depending on language skill) to one or the other!

Hang in! Teething is hard work!

During this trying teething time, be sure to use Motrin, it works longer than Tylenol does and keep up with the doses every 6 hours!
