Hello Moms and Pops,

So after three years the braces are finally coming off. He had an overbite, courtesy of me, a crossbite, courtesy of his father, and a whole lot of other teeth straightening issues that are finally resolved. The braces come off tomorrow and he'll be fit for his retainer.

My question??? what can we do to celebrate? I don't want to make a huge deal out of it because he simply complied with a regular growing requirement that most of us have experienced. BUT I want to acknowledge his efforts and success in some manner.

There are no right or wrong answers here...I'm just asking for some thoughts or ideas on what ya'll think might help to congratulate him/close this chapter in a fun and/or significant way.

:-)!!!!!!!!!!! S.

So What Happened?

so it is almost unanimous. some sort of forbidden food! I am thinking carmel corn. He has been jonesing for that for quite some time. I see a stop on the way home from work today.

Thanks to all for your support and input!! :-) S.

At my sons orthodontist, when the braces came off they handed him a small bag containing candy he wasn't allowed to eat while he wore braces - taffy and such.
I understood - but I wasn't thrilled about it.
How about corn on the cob?
He'll be able to brush and floss a whole lot easier now that all the hardware is out of his mouth but he still needs to keep up his good habits.

My daughter never had ortho issues... Thank God.

I did... And I had braces as a young adult. I celebrated by eating a sandwich!! It was great to bite into a sandwich without having to floss immediately.

My son has braces as well. He is just going into his second year of them, but his teeth look great!! We also had MAJOR teeth issues, even had to pull 4!
He has said that when he gets his braces off he is going to eat everything he hasn't been able to eat. Gum! Gummies! Caramel! Corn on the Cob! Popcorn!
That's probably what we are going to do...let him pig out on all the stuff he has watched us eat that he can't.

Most orthodontists give their patients a bag of all they couldn't eat. My kids seemed to enjoy that so I did nothing more.

when my son got his off? He wanted a meatball sandwich - wanted to eat without wondering if something was going to be stuck in his braces!!

Take him out to dinner and let him order whatever he wants. Probably things he wasn't allowed to have before... like chicken wings or ribs. :)

I have one that got out last year and one that went in this year. LOL

My son is in the midst of his orthodontic work. When he gets the braces themselves removed the office has goodie bags filled with all the forbidden foods. He's looking forward to that. The one thing he's looking forward to and we will be doing is a caramel apple from Disneyland. While we don't do it often, we like to get one as a treat and take it home to eat the next day. We cut 1 up and share it between the 5 of us. We've been good about not getting one until he's done. It's been a while now LOL So, when the braces come off, getting a Disneyland caramel apple is top of our list.
Getting those braces off is a big deal. It's no different than making a big deal of losing a tooth and having the tooth fairy come. It's something that's got to happen but it's worth celebrating.

i also paid for her to have teeth whitening - the cheaper version not the real expensive one

Our girl is going next month for an appointment for them. She's been looking online and is all of a sudden afraid of them. She is the one who wanted them. So now we're forcing the issue to her instead of her forcing it to us. We finally got it settled with her insurance because they'd said no. Now they're going to go ahead and allow them.
