That Time of the Month Problem

I am wondering if anyone has had this same problem or if there is anyone out there who could give me an idea as to what could be wrong. I do not know for sure if this is a GYN problem or one for a regular doctor. Thanks for any info. :)

I was on the Depo shot from 2 weeks after I had my daughter in 2006 up until last summer. I had very short periods each month lasting no more than 2 days. I stopped taking the shot due to not having insurance. Since Oct. of this past year I have been having some very weird periods. Examples of this is that I bled the entire months of Jan. & Feb. of this year. Then I had no period in March. Once April came around & even to this day I've had a period every 14-17 days apart. They rotate between being light to heavy.

I have taken several pregnancy tests so I know that I am not pregnant. It is to the point that the constant blood loss is taking its toll on me. My hair is coming out in serious gobs (for lack of a better word) when I shower or brush my hair; which I think is due to the loss of iron in my system (I am also slightly anemic). I have only lately been trying to add supplements to my diet to compensate for the vitamins being lost with my period. I deal with bouts of bad cramping that remind me of my first period ever as well as muscle cramps/pains in my legs, lower stomach & back. OTC pain meds like Advil do not do much.

I am very concerned about this being another more serious problem which is why I need an idea as to which doctor I should see. I used Depo after I had my 11 y/o & went with no period for the entire 2 years I was on it followed by only 2 months of a heavy period after. I have since used the pill & the patch over the years with none of these problems. I hoped that by now the Depo would be out of my system & that my body would be normal. Again, thank you for any advice.

So What Happened?

Thank you for the advice. At least now I know where to go. If I ever stop bleeding long enough to make an appointment I'll let you know what happened. I've had to cancel 3 times cause every time my appointment would finally come around I'd start all over again. Just started again yesterday after an almost 7 day break (of course the GYN I was going to use had zero appointments last week). I know from previous experience that they can't see you while you have your period especially since I am past due for my yearly. This is very annoying!

Thanks again for everything!!

**UPDATE TO MY UPDATE**

FINALLY made it in to the GYN. They will do an ultrasound next week. Found out that my BP is a little high which I've never had problems with in the past. Told this could be a sign of cysts or something much worse (the raised BP plus period every 2 weeks). Now I'm worried. Will update again. Thanks!

You may already have your answers but I just wanted to throw out a thought that immediately came to mind when I read your story. You may want to check with your GYN so they can rule out Fibroids I know several people who had it and had weird periods and bleeding for weeks and months at a time etc. Not sure about the birth control but I would check to make sure. Sorry for the late response.

S.,

I have had problems in the past with my periods. However I never used the Depo. In the past two years I have had two D & C's, because of crazy periods and bleeding problems similiar to which you are describing. You definitely need to go see a GYN. It sounds like you may have a hormone problem and that can be fixed with pills or something.

Good luck.

HI S.;

I too used to be on Depo. At first, you think this is great;no periods. But that is not good; I don't care what anybody says.

It's natural and good for a woman to have periods. I decided to give it up. Not because it made me gain weight but because a friend who is a holistic practitioner, said that the above as well.

I did notice after I stopped, that I had aches and pains that were unbearable. I got tested for everything but nothing came up. I saw many doctors again, nobody found anything wrong. Thank goodness.

I would definitely call your OB. I know I called my OB when I was having issues. He said my period issues were due to breastfeeding. I know that you can miss a period while breastfeeding but having a short cycle really scared me.

He put me at ease. Also, I loved the fact that he said, "don't do this to yourself." I thought there was something really wrong with me. Even though, I am breastfeeding, I still get my period.

Put yourself at ease and call your doctor today!

Best to you.

Hi S.,

I would recommend that you see a GYN and an endocrinologist. After you get your diagnosis, it would be good to see a chiropractor to have your nervous system checked. If your nervous system isn't functioning properly it can cause hormonal imbalances, muscle cramping, decreased immune function and many other things. This will be a natural way of getting your body back on track instead of resorting to drugs which can lead to a bunch of other problems for you. I hope this helps!

All the best to you,
C.
