When my husband and I got married (actually before we got married) we decided that Thanksgiving was going to be a friend holiday.

I love cooking the dinner and we invite whatever friends don't have anywhere else to be.

That way we never have to worry about whose family we're going to spend it with.

We used to travel and try to fit everyone in the metroplex into our schedule (like 4 different houses) but now that we have kiddos we called that quits. We started inviting everyone to our house and if they come they come, if not that is fine too. It usually ends up being my in-laws and us. It turns into a wonderful, relaxing, family day.. I love it!

It's usually just my son and I. Some years we go to my Aunt's house and some years, when my Ex's family is in town we go to my Ex's house. When it is just us we usually go volunteer for a while then have a late lunch together.

I have added a new twist - two years ago my son and his friends decided they wanted to have a holiday meal together. So I usually do the whole turkey dinner a few days after Thanksgiving and invite his guy friends over. They all get spiffed and polished and stuff themselves, then play video games and have Nerf wars. It's a hoot since they are all just 14 and 15 this year.

This year the not-in-laws are in town, so my son will go to my Ex's, but I think I will excuse myself and spend spend my day volunteering.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!

Thanksgiving is usually the holiday that we travel to visit my family, as it is more reliable with the timing than Christmas is.

I usually spend it with my side of the family, which my husband doesn't like to go too, so he'll spend it alone. However, this year he's going to his side and I'm going to mine with the kids...

Thanksgiving has always been a family dinner. When I was a child we'd go to my father's mom's home or my mother's mom's home. Occasionally they would travel to our home.

Now I'm the oldest, except for my MIL and we host Thanksgiving dinner here. I smoke a turkey and every family brings something for the dinner. My MIL lives 500 miles from here and eats dinner with her other children that live within 25 miles of her. One year my kids spend Thanksgiving with us and the next year they will spend Thanksgiving with their in-laws.

I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Now that our kids are grown and live far, far away... Hubby and I either go visit our moms (one is 3 miles away, the other is an hour away) or we go out of town, get a hotel and let a restaurant feed us turkey dinner. It's quite liberating to be an empty nester.

We use to travel to family for all holidays. After having our son (5 years ago), we got sick of traveling so much. Now, we have Thanksgiving at our home. Both sides of the family are welcomed. If they come, great! If not, we are okay with that too.

we used to travel every year for thanksgiving & christmas, now we have 3 kids & our son is severely disabled (non mobile, non verbal, blind, seizure disorder) so now we travel for one holiday only either thanksgiving or christmas & we alternate which family we spend it with (both our family's live in separate states)...my mother & father (& one sister & her kids) do live in town, however this year I have decided that I want to have a nice family dinner just our little family, i have invited my parents for dessert only (this might sound harsh but my mom causes a lot of drama & my husband has been working a lot lately)...

Well, we're a bit different. We have no family in town and adopted our second son a year and a half ago. Last T-giving and this one coming up we get together with my son's biological family, plus extended family. It's the only time of the year the extended family gets to see him. He sees his birthmom and bio brother once a month or so and his grandparents about every quarter. There were like 50 people there last year. They have a lot of cousins, aunts, uncles, great-grandparents, etc. It was a lot of fun and we all enjoyed ourselves.

Growing up, I had a big family and I loved holidays with lots of people. Since getting married and having no family around, it's just been my husband and child once the first one came along. I love being able to have a big family T-giving again.
