What's a good temperature to keep the thermostat at in my home? We've been ranging between 75 and 77 degrees, is 75 too cold for baby?

Lisa,

When I had my first baby 8+ years ago, my pediatrician said that when it comes to temperatures (hot or cold), just go by how I am feeling. If I am comfortable, my baby will be comfortable. I now have three kids (the youngest being 8 months) and the simple, common sense advice I received from the doctor has worked just perfectly.

I live just outside of Austin and we have been having 100+ degree days. My hubby and I work out of our home so we keep the A/C temp at 74-75 degrees, with the ceiling fans going. This setting works well for us. We watch our usage as well since we are very conscious about not having high electric bills.

Hope this helps!

Smiles,
K.

Hi Lisa...We keep ours @ 80 during the day when everyone's gone, 78 when we get home in the evenings, and 75 for overnight. It's just whatever your family becomes accustomed to and what your electricity budget is!

Hi,

New Mom of a baby girl. We keep our temperature at 78 degrees during the day and at 74 at night since we swaddle our little one she sleeps 8 hours. During the day we keep her in a pamper and bib she seems to be fine.

You can keep the temperature comfortable for you and just put a little extra on baby (like making sure feet are covered with socks or a one piece, footed outfit). 75 is likely fine for a baby. You don't want them to be too warm either, so light clothing with socks is probably fine. I don't think that is too cold at all. That is what we keep our house at and I have a 1 year old. Last summer, we kept it about the same and I usually dressed him in short sleeves, lightweight pants (cotton, not jeans) and socks. I just made sure most of him was covered so that he woudn't get a draft since we usually have ceiling fans running on low as well.

My pediatrician recommended between 68 and 72 degrees. Otherwise go by how you feel...if you feel hot the baby feels the same. The sids alliance recommends between 68 and 72 because it reduces the risk of sids. I did 75 during waking times and 72 while sleeping.

Whatever temperature your baby is used to is fine. All of my doctors have said that if you are cold the baby is cold and if you are hot the baby is hot. If you are not sure feel your babies nose or toes. If they feel cold then it might be a little cold in the house. I keep my house around 76-77 and my kiddos do fine.

After a baby reaches 24 hours old it can regulate its body temperature just like the rest of us. So, as long as you are comfortable in a room the baby is too.

They say that it is actually better for the baby to be in cooler temps. Not sure how old your baby is, but for small infants in particular for things such as SIDS. I just keep my baby wrapped good and feel his hands and nose to see if he is cold. You don't want them to sweat, especially when they sleep. We leave our house around 74 in the evenings and 77 during the day.

I keep mine at 78 and occasionally drop it to 76 temporarily to cool off when I get flustered. Then I put it back up to 78. A small fan in the kitchen helps cool me down without having to turn down the temp too. I try to do that to save money at times.

We are trying to get our temp to 78 during the day. It is hard. We are very comfortable at 76, but had a humongous utility bill last month. Bumping to 78 is our goal.

Apparently, somewhere in my family tree, a polar bear was involved. I keep the AC at 73 during the day and 70 at night. I cant for the life of me set that thermostat higher than that!!! My DD has never had a problem.

Footnote: When IKE came through Galveston, the only thing that was on my mond was being cool...food?...water?....I NEED MY AC!!!! (just a little laugh for you)

My Pediatrician always told me that a baby should be comfortable with the same temperature that comforts you and you should always dress the baby as you are dressed. Our temperature is always set at 75. Everyone seems cozy.

I have 4 kids and my youngest just turned 2. 75 is completely fine... We actually run our house at 78 during the day and down to 73 at night -- even when he was an infant. I just made sure he had warm pajamas on at night...
