Teething Troubles

My 8 month old son has four teeth. Two top and two bottom teeth. He is constantly grinding them together. I didn't mind or worry for the first week or two but it has now been 2 months and he does it all the time. How can I get him to stop grinding? And if I can't how bad is it for his teeth????

What can I do next?

Hi,

I also have two sons : ) My youngest will be 9 months tomorrow. He has six teeth now (4 top, 2 bottom) and grinds them all the time. I don't think it really hurts anything except maybe our ears. I think it just feels good while they are teething and it's new to them so they do it. He should just stop on his own as the novelty wears off. Good luck!

Ask Dr Sears Web Site is wonderful. Also, there is a homeopathic product that we used with great success called Camilia. It seemed to sooth any pain and made teething no trouble.
Good luck!

Hi A.! I think that sometimes the grinding is associated with discomfort. It was for my daughter. We gave her Hylands teething tablets and the grinding stopped! You can find them at Wal-Mart for about five dollars. They were a lifesaver for us!
Also, we were just to the dentist and he said that our son grinds his teeth a little but it's not an issue for baby teeth.

I agree with Karissa, he's just checkin out his new teeth. My son is 7 months and he now has 7 teeth and has been grinding the since he had only four. That sound is like nails on a chalkboard to me and I usually hand him off to his dad or I put him in his pack-n-play and let him distract himself. Absolutely nothing to worry about!

My youngest went through this just a couple months ago, at about 8 months as well. He had 8 teeth at that point and ground them what seemed constantly.

It stopped about a month after it started with no interference. It seems to be a phase that passes on its own.
