I've got a soothing balm and that helps with the pain but I never hurt like this with my older boy... he's even given me a blood blister. Sheesh. what to do moms?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
I'm not sure if the problem is just with biting, or with sucking harder than normal. If it's biting, though, I've been through that, and here's what I did. My kids would sometimes bite and not let go, and when they did, I would immediately plug their nose. That would break the latch, and surprise them just enough to get them to not do it too much. Other than that, the only thing I can suggest if you think he's trying to relieve teething pain is rub his gums real hard with your finger prior to letting him latch on, which might give him enough relief to not use you as a teether! Good luck.

How is his latch? Have you tried pulling him off and then putting him back on?

When my daughter was first teething - she would bite occasionally too. I would constantly have to take her off.... it was so painful and then after a while she learned that when she bit momma - she had to stop nursing (which she hated more than anything) and after those first 2 teeth came in - she was back to normal.

When I got bit I would take them off the breat right away and say sternly; "OUCH! No biting!" They both would get so mad I took them off. They stopped after a week or two.

Is he biting you?? If so, once he does, stop the feeding. He is at the age where he can be taught that biting is not acceptable. If he is just latching on and sucking hard, maybe he needs to be fed a bit sooner...he may be going through a growth spurt...

K.---If you have a blister---He is latching on wrong. I had the same problem. (I have a 10 yr old, who I breastfed also)
I talked to a lactation nurse, and she corrected the problem fast. and it was soooo less painful.
She said every childs mouth is different--so it wasn't me that was doing anything wrong, she just learned the wrong way--but only on one side.
I breastfed until my daughter was 14months, with 2 teeth.

hi

Understand your dialima but i learnt that if they are nursing they can't bit, nursing requires them to use the tounge and the roof of the mouth to squeeze the breast the teeth can't connect to the breast, so check how the baby is lacthing on and then remove and speak firmly " NO BITING" it worked for me and my son. He breastfeed until his 3rd birthday and stopped all on his own. Trying talking they are very intelligent

Good Luck

My DD was about 13 months when this started happening to me and by 15 months I couldn't take it anymore. My DH thought I was just wining and complaining but what he didn't know/realize I LOVED breastfeeding. LOVED IT! Such a special time between Mom & Baby! It killed me so finally I had him look at my nipple after she "let go!" He couldn't believe it and saw how purple my nipples were. I had to stop, there was no other way. What actually helped was that my DH understood and supported me b/c I creid while she cried b/c she wanted to nurse. Luckily at that point it was only to go to sleep.
I have heard of people using a nipple shield to help. Not sure how or if it works. I'm not sure how old you DS is but if he's not old enough to stop, but it may be worth trying.
