My 5 month is teething and is also crying, is there anything to help ease the pain without giving acetaminophen all the time. He does not like the teething rings.
Thank you to all who gave wonderful suggestions. As soon as I soon how many moms recommended the teething tablets I went and got some. They are little mircile workers. I aslo tried rum which calms him down when he has just been crying all day because he hurts. Thanks again.

My son seemed to teeth from the time he was born! One of my friends told me about Humphreys Teething taablets. You get them at Walgreens. You are supposed to melt them in water. I did that till he was a little older. Now we just put the tablets in his mouth and he chews them. They really work.

You can use the orajel or I use teething tablets. They are herbal, completely safe and they dissolve so you don't have to worry about getting it in the right spot. I like Humphrey's brand, they are anywhere in the pharmacy department. I get them at Target, Wal-mart whereever.

There is a homeopathic remedy found at health store like Whole Foods and Sprouts in the Nutrition and Vitamin area. It is Chamomilla (6c or 30c potency). Three little pellets in the mouth will calm them down and ease the discomfort. You can give as often as needed, it has no negative affects like pain relievers do.

Hi L.,
Try giving your little one some teething tablets. They can be found at any grocery store, drug store, or health food store. Also you can try frozen waffles, cool washcloths, Popsicles, and a cold Binky if he uses one. All of these things helped my 3 boys through this difficult time!
Good luck with everything!

You could try wrapping an ice cube in a small/thin wash cloth and "tying" it off with a rubberband or something and letting him chew on that. Could also try that Baby Oral Gel to rub on your child's gums. Seemed to work (although quite temporarily) for my son. Frozen ice treats (like Italian ice) (all chopped up) could work too...good luck! I know it can be upsetting for everyone in the household!

Chamomile tea is a natural pain reliever. It's naturally caffeine free. Is also helps with colic as well. My daughter drinks it like its water. but it is good for them and it does have vitamins as well. There's also teething tablets you can get in the health food section. It's just a consecrated dose of chamomile tea. The brand is Hyland's homeopathic. How ever do not teething gels no matter what brand. They all have chemicals in them that can cause cancer, kidney, liver damage.

My pediatrician suggested wetting a washcloth then sticking it in the freezer to nearly freeze it. Then, you can pull it out and your baby can sort of gnaw on it. The coldness helps to numb the pain.

This is my grandmothers remedy that has worked on all my children like a charm. A cold dill pickle. It is cold and soothing and acts as an astringent. Of course you need to watch out for small chunks so it won't choke him, and it usually takes one or two times for him to like the flavor. Get the camera for great photo moments.
Good luck

Hi L.,
I'm preparing for this stage as well and took some advice from our first peditrician six years ago that the teething process is just that..."a process" so it is helpful to find remedies that help comfort along the long road of teething. Two things I have found help with the irritability are chamomile and Highlands Teething Tablets. Chamomile can be given in the form of tea or pellets. (You can find homeopathic remedies at the Co-op or Vitamin store on El Paseo). You just give little pellets under the tongue or dillute in a small teaspoon of water. The Teething Tablets can be found at Albertson's. I found both help take the edge off and on really bad days would supplement with Tylenol. Also, a cold wet wash cloth that is put in the freezer just to get it very cold (not icey) is helpful to chew on...you can also put the tea on it to have your little one suck on it.
I hope one or all of those suggestions might help...good luck to all of you!
Best,

Been there three times over! Try soaking several washcloths in water, squeezing them out gently, then putting them in freezer safe baggies for an hour or two. When he fusses, he can chew on the cold cloths(out of the baggie, of course!). This also works well for biting issues, which hopefully you won't experience but you never know with boys!!! Best of luck.

I had a lot of success using clove oil on my children's gums. It doesn't taste good, but it is benign and effective. You can find it at the co-op, Whole Foods, the Herb Store, etc. Given the issues with liver damage and long-term health, I would definitely save acetaminophen as a last resort. Teething is not easy, but it doesn't last forever. Just feels like it.

For a great homeopathic solution try Hyland's teething tablets or drops. The tablets are very small and dissolve almost instantly - rub 2-3 tablets on the gums where the teeth are coming in and your son should get almost instant relief. At the childcare center where I used to work in the infant class many of the parents used these for their children with great success.

We've always used the Hyland's Teething Tablets. They dissolve much easier than the alternative, Humphrey's brand. They are also a natural alternative to Tylenol (& other pain relievers) and our children like the taste & they go directly to the source. You can find these at WalMart or some other local grocery stores carry them too.
We have also done frozen bagels, waffles & frozen wet wash cloths. Please use the frozen foods with caution being your child is so young ~ as they may pose a potential choking hazard.

Hi. I am a Naturopathic Physician and I would recommend getting some teething tablets that are homeopathic. You can purchase these from Whole Foods, Sprouts or Sunflower markets. You may also try rubbing clove oil on the gums to help numb them. This can also be purchased at the above markets. I used to wet and freeze a washcloth and then let my babies chew on that. I did not like them chewing on plastic teething toys. Hope this helps.

Hylands makes a homeopathic teething tablet. I was skeptical of them at first, but gave them a try anyway. The pharmacist told me, "I don't understand why these work, since there doesn't seem to be any ingredient that makes sense, but a lot of people swear by them." They were wonderful. They are just a little tablet that you place on or under the baby's tongue and they disolve. Good luck, hope you find something to soother your lil guy!

Hi L. -
You can try a relaxing herbal tea. Just dip your finger into the warm tea and rub it along his gums. The soothing herbs will calm down the nerve endings. If you like fresh herbs, try Chamomile, Lavender, Catnip, Oat tops, Lemon balm, and/or Nettles. Use about 1t of herb per cup of water. Boil the water & remove from heat, add the herbs and allow to steep for about 5 minutes. Strain and pour a small amount into a little bowl. Using your finger, dip into the tea and rub the liquid onto his gums. As he is only going to need a small amount of tea, you can enjoy the rest of the cup. You can do this as often as you like. Even if you are breastfeeding, none of the above mentioned herbs have any contraindications for breastfeeding mothers.

my son is 15 months old and still teething, so it is a long process but they get used to it after they break through the first couple teeth. it will get easier. i use a homeopathic remedy from wild oats, whole foods, or the co-op that seems to work. the brand is called hylands and they are little tables that you put in their mouth, they disolve quickly so no worries of choking. there is also another homeopathic, perhaps hylands also but they are little tubes of liquid that you squeez into the mouth of the baby, easier to put in babies mouth.
good luck

Hi L.!
Most natural food stores carry a great product called Camilla. It's a clear liquid in a little tube that you squeeze into the baby's mouth. It works wonders, even for babies for whom Hyland's or other remedies might not work.
Another thing that worked great for my babies was to put an ice cube inside a little baby feeder (it's a sealed container made of mesh with a handle for the baby to hold.) They carry them at grocery stores, drug stores, etc. They can gum the ice as much as they want inside the container, with no risk of choking on it.
Good luck!

You can rub his gums with your finger as a temporary fix. Also, freeze a baby washcloth. I know it sounds silly, but wet the cloth and roll it up in a cylinder shape and freeze it. Then when he starts crying, he can "chew" on ice which numbs his gums and its soft after it thaws.
I hope this helps,

One thing that my son loved when he was teething was (I know it sounds crazy) chewing on a thick piece of leather. He actuall crawled into the closet and found it, but it worked great and now it stays in the toy box.
One word of caution with teething tablets...there are some that have the medicine on the outside of the tablet and when you handle them, you rub it off, so read the bottle and if you get that brand, make sure to dump the tablets into the lid (or a spoon or something) and use that to put it into your child's mouth Good luck!

You might want to try Hylands TEETHING #3 by Humphreys Homeopathic Remedies. There are 135 small quickly dissovling pellets for which you give them 3 that help with pain and discomfort. They now all make Childrens Teething by Hylands Teething Gel is a homeopathic topical gel for symptomatic relief from pain, irritability and restlessness due to teething. My oldest is 28 and I used them with her who by the way started teething at 6 weeks and had a full set of teeth by 10 months. I now also use them with my granddaughter and what we have notice is even if it is not enough to completely help here we only need to use half the suggested amount of Tylenol for her to relax enough to sleep. You can get these products usually at Wal-mart, Walgreen etc. just ask you the pharmacist if you can't find it. Best Wishes, D.
