Teething??? - Sedalia,MO

I am having trouble telling if my son is teething. Maybe I am just lucky. He's 5 months old, has white little bumps on the bottom, in the middle. He is not drooling, has no fever, no crying. The thing is though he goes crazy trying to find anything to chew on. Blanket, finger, arm, some toys, bottle. It used to only be at night now it's almost all the time. He gets fussy and just acts like he can't get enough, that the nibbling on things isn't soothing him. Orajel and teething tabs really don't seem to do much. He does not want to chew on anything that has to do with teething either. Just some ideas or advice would be nice.....Thanx

What can I do next?

Hopefully he is teething and doesn't have the luck my son does. He started getting those bumps at like 3 months and for like a week he'd be really crabby, and then it would go back down. It did that like 4 times, then finally at like 9 1/2 months they finally decided to break through. So now at almost 11 months he has two.
Good luck

My son did simlar actions...and yes, he was teething. There were times that without even a little bit of fuss there were more teeth, no drooling or anything. Interesting fact that my Dr. gave me is that the stuff like Orajel just harden the gums and make it harder for the teeth to break thru. Hope this helps.

Hi A.! Congratulations on your baby! I'm a single mom of one and my kiddo is my life too, it's the best. Your baby boy likes to chew on things, let him! The teeth will come, no worries. Right now it's all about comforting him. Every baby is different and unique and special, I enjoy babies very much and feel the best part is getting to know them and what they like. Try different things to find his favorite, something that isn't too hard or too small, something he can possibly handle with is own hands, which isn't necessary but nice, and something that won't succumb to the power of baby salive and dissolve. You'll find what works best. I wouldn't give him too much Orajel or other stuff until it's an emergency, it can harden the gums if used too much and make teething more painful. I never used it, and just gave her liquid tylenol like once in a blue moon when she was especially uncomfortable. Well enjoy your baby! Good luck!

I also have a 5 month old named Gavin! =0) He hates the baby Orajel, but I've found that giving him a bit of baby Tylenol works for him. Eases the pain, calms him down.

Hi, my daughter was the same way she was an easy teether for the most part. I found that freezing a frozen washrag worked, the other is a little odd, but worked very well, a small portion of a frozen waffle. I know it sounds crazy, but it worked the best. Good luck to you!

Hi! I am a stay at home mother of 3. 2 girls and a boy. In my opinion he is teething. All babies have a different way of dealing with cutting teeth. My son chews on everything, and would prefer not to have orajel or teething tabs. My daughters on the other hand had to have orajel and tylenol all the time. So if he wants to chew, just let him do that if it makes him happy. I hope this helps.

Hi A.,

My son as well went through a horrible teething stage. We started about 6 months old. Saddly for him he did not get those teeth till 2 wks before his first birthday. He would chew on my keyboard trey, my desk chair, my arm, you name it he tried to chew on it. I read that if you wet a corner of a wash cloth and put it in the freezer then give it to them. That they like the rough feeling of it. So I was like what the hell might as well try it. It worked. I even did just a wet wash cloth. I also put the teething toys in the freezer and let him have the coolness of the toy rub across his teeth. Seemed to help. Course teething tablets also worked. But I did not give them to him all the time.

What is horrible as a mom is watching your baby go through this horrible experience when you know you can not do any thing really about it. Have you tryed Tylenol to ease the pain as well?

Good Luck!!

our daughter was the same way, what she loved were those little fruit and vegitable nets, we'd put frozen banannas in them (although im sure any fruit or veggie would work.)

What you described sounds like "pearling", where the teeth are just below the surface of the gums, ready to erupt. Niether of my babies (now 4 and 1) were feverish or upset with teething, but they did both drool like starving bulldogs! With all the drool, a teething bib was my salvation. You might want to invest in that teething bib or a chew toy. They make these awesome ergonomic chew toys that will relieve the oral fixation and sooth the swollen gums. Since your son doesn't drool this might be right up your alley. I also used these homeopathic teething tablets. Somehow they soothed the fussy beast, but have no medicinal properties. And both my kids loved them, chowed them down everytime. They taste like nothing and dissolve under your tongue in an instant.

Try taking a damp clean washcloth, put it in the fridge for a little while and let it get cold, the let him chew on it. When my 6 month old has teething fits I do this and it's the only thing that works. Sometime I put the wash cloth over my finger and let him chew on that a bit. The coldness feels good on his gums.

Could be teething if he keeps his fingers in his mouth. If his stool is loose that can be a sign to.

I would give him some motrin to help w/ the swelling of those little "teethers" below the gums.

Also, I would put my kids pacifier in the freezer for a little bit and let it get really cold and give it to them. They LOVED to suck on it cold to help relieve the teething pain. (also helps w/ swelling and sensitivity)

It sound sto me like he is teething. My daughter only wanted to chew on cold rags and things like that. You could try to wet a rag and freeze it and let him chew on that.

My son was the same way. He was never fussy and never had a fever or anything that should do with teething. He chewed on everything and he got 4 teeth in at a time almost every time. From what it sounds like to me he his teething. I wouldnt' worry so much about it. Babies get teeth in at all kinds of random months. My daughter got her first two at 4 months as did my son. Babies chew and chew. My son loved chewing on a cold wet wash rag. It seemed to help him. You could try that or try some teething rings that you put in the fridge. They cold seems to help calm them a bit. Just try not to worry he will get those teeth in no time and he will know how to use them lol. I know my daughter sure does! Take care and good luck.

Definitely sounds like teething. I'd just let him chew on anything that was safe for him. If it's what he's interested in, it's obviously working for him. Every child is different on what works for them. I often gave my daughter frozen carrots, but you have to be careful with this so they don't bit off a piece accidentally and choke on it. The mesh bags some have recommended sound like they'd really do the trick in instances like this - keep them from choking...

Sounds like you got lucky. No fussin, no fever,no cryin'! When my kids were teething, I got a regular little teething ring and froze it and put a little washcloth around it and they loved it, plus it numbs their gums a bit. try it and let me know if it works

I never knew when my son was teethng because he never ran a fever, never hardly ever cried, barely drooled and next thing we knew, his teeth were in. My daughter on the other hand. . . . . . .droooooolin queen. So its totally normal to have a child that doesnt have any symptoms of teething. Naturally each child is different, so thank your ever lasting stars and the good Lord above that its as good as it is. The FEW times he would get upset, I popped the teething tablets in and he was fine. . ice also does the trick. Good luck!

For our daughter we found these great treathing keys. They could be frozen, frigrated, or just given to her. She loved them any way. They were all she would use. She loved them frozen, but they were good when they warmed up too. We also found that mortane worked for her an not much else. We would only give it to her at night so we all could get some sleep and only if she was having a really bad day.

Hi my son just turned a year old, and He too hated all the teething stuff that they have out, He would not take a pacifer either. So he did a lot of biting. I did find that letting him chew on vibrating toys helped a little bit. But all in all, they are babies and they will chew on everything and anything that makes them feel better. I did give him cold wet washcloths instead of letting him chew on his clothes and that helped sometimes too. But a solution to one kid is not always a solution for another, but it never hurts to try anything you are comfortable. Good Luck and I hope you find something that works for him.

it sounds like his teeth are about to come in. i got these mesh bags with handles--i'm not sure what they are called, but i got them at target in the baby section. you can put ice cubes and frozen fruit, etc. in them and the baby can chew on it without choking. my daughter loved them and they really help with teething. good luck!!

Same thing with my daughter when she started teething. She liked the little handle mesh bag with an ice cube in it. The one thing that really helped the fussiness was tylenol.
