My baby's gums are red and swollen and I can see a faint spot of white. I know a tooth is coming, but I was wondering when it will arrive. :)
How long, on average, does it take for the tooth to break through once the redness of the gums shows up?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, it has been one month since her tooth first started to emerge and now there is a second one right beside it. The first one is about 1/2 way up. Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. The Boiron Camilla works great!

Hi G.! Hang in there, this may be a long ride. All babies are different. All 3 of mine were. My eldest started at 4 months, and didn't get a tooth in her head till she was 11 months old. My second was "normal", in that she started about 6 months, and had them all by 16 months. My son, got all 4 sets at one time at 4 months. It was not fun, but with my first I discovered Hyland's teething tablets. They're in the medicine aisle (I think, my youngest is 6 so they may have moved them).
By starting, I mean...the redness & swollenness would appear, then recede. They all ran a low grade temp and were a little snotty. The Dr's say there's no link between all of this, but all the kids I know have experienced the same symptoms.
I hope this is helpful.

Is she acting as if it bothers her much? The gums do get 'fatter' before teeth come in (maybe actual swelling, and maybe just filling out to accommodate the teeth). Sometimes you'll see those little white spots on their gums FOREVER before an actual tooth comes through! LOL They like to chew on cool things (gel-filled teethers that have been refrigerated or frozen are nice). I used to take the flat part of a fingernail/thumbnail and rub til the tooth points cut through the gums. Makes them REALLY sore for a day or two, then it's all over (where it would take a couple weeks of chewing on things for them to cut it through themselves). I'm a 'pushy' someone, though. Numzit or Ora-Gel are good numbing products to try if it bothers her much.
I'm 'Mom' to 4 grown kids and 'Mom-Mom' to 3 little ones.

Get some orajel then there is a little rubber finger fitting that has some soft bristles on it. Put the orajel on that and rub your baby's gums, gently but with a little pressure. It will help them to break thru the gums. Good luck.

PS. The nighttime works a little better than the regular.

My son just got his first tooth in. From the time I could see a spot of white, it was about 1-2 weeks before it made it's appearance. His gums have been rigid and red for about 3 1/2 months. I was wondering if a tooth would ever come in!

My little girl has one coming in now that she's been working on for months, 3 more to go after this, but with her, most of the time anyway when you see/feel the tooth it's only a matter of days before it's all the way through. Now, there has been at least one that I saw start to come in and the next day I looked and it was gone. I assume it was swelling that made that happen but who knows. Orajel did nothing for us and Alyssa hated it. Ibuprofen worked best, and a cold frozen wet washcloth, and if your little one is old enough, those fruit pop cycles, you can get them with no sugar added. Alyssa loved those, now that I think about it, I should get some Sunday when we go grocery shopping! It seemed like Alyssa would fuss for 2 months before her gums would even look red, and that's been the case for the last month, she would say her mouth hurt and finally it's crowned (as of last night) Hang in there! Hyland's also did nothing for us, I tried homeopathic first. Tylenol worked ok when she was too young for Ibuprofen

By the way hyland's teething tablets are GREAT for teething (and temper tantrums, and when the baby does not know what they want!)

(I have used homeopathic remedies ALL my life and so did my parents and grandparents, they are very safe!)

They are on the bottom shelf at walmart in the vitamin section (close the the airborn)

There is no set time, but it truly isn't as long as it feels like it is. Some babies teeth without pain at all while others will have swollen gums & pain for weeks sometimes. Heredity plays a role in how your child will teeth. If you or your husband teethed early, chances are so will your baby & how you teethed may be a clue as to how she will as well. The average age for teething is 7 months, but my 1st child started teething before her 3rd month, my Mom thought I was overeacting when I told her about it, LOL. So each child is different, even in teething.

You can help it along by rubbing her gums, in fact it would probably feel good to her. Give her a wet, cold rag to gnaw on, they love that. Of course teething rings that you put in the freezer are nice but often they are so cold they don't like holding them. Baby Orajel works well but none of my kids enjoyed that, kind of freaked them out. But then even in adults it's an odd sensation. But it does help after the initial shock of it.

I also used a natural remedy by Hylands called Teething Tablets http://www.hylands.com/products/teething.php and those really seemed to help as well. You can find them, I believe, at most stores these days.

I know it looks like her little gums will explode but they wont. As soon as the teeth abrupt she'll start feeling better and hopefully sleeping better.

Some come through faster than others. For my son it was anywhere from a week to a month and I think the first one was over a month. It depends on the tooth I guess.

My little girl will be 7 months old in a few days. I first noticed a white spot about a month ago and we're still waiting for a tooth. She's been fussy and in discomfort some, but it comes in spurts.

I think the "average" is a wide range - anywhere from a week to a couple of months before the tooth breaks through.

I don't know if there is an average time it takes for a tooth to come in. It seems like the first teeth come in fairly quickly, maybe within a week/week and a half of the swollen gums. The molars take forever to come in though.

my daughter got teeth literally over night. she had no swelling or redness, and she would just wake up in the morning with a tooth. my son however, had very red and very swollen gums for months before the teeth broke through. i think that all babies are different, and all you can do is try to keep her comfortable.

one thing that is soon to come... the baby's body will produce very acidic saliva to protect the opening in the gums naturally, but the down-side to that is that they also SWALLOW a lot of that saliva, and it hurts their tummy. Teething and gas go hand-in-hand, so sometimes if the little muffin is crying, it may be her tummy :( shouldn't be long now, though :) My first son got teeth in a matter of days after that little white spot, my second born went MONTHS with a little white spot, but no tooth :) once they start coming, they come quickly, though. one after the other :)

Until I had my daughter, I thought that teething was an overnight event. She would magically wake up with a tooth after one bad night of sleep. ( : Ha! I think her first tooth took at least one month and maybe two before it came through (and didn't go back down). It takes a long time. Teething is not constant, your little one may teethe and then get a break. Good luck! Oh, my daughter didn't get her first tooth until she was about 7 months old. My son was a similar age.

I have worked the dentisty for 8 years, once a tooth crowns, thats actually is the part that hurts the worst because it tears the tissue or gum to try and come through, to answer your about how long does it take for a tooth to actually come through varies from child to child. It comes through quickier that you think. You could probably put your child to bed and the next morning the tooth may show a little more and then before you know it the tooth beside of it is crowning. I would give your baby teething toys. I used to put my son's in the freezier and he would "teeth" on that because it's cold and it's so cold it kinda numbs the gums and that would make the gums feel better and you don't have use the teeth gels so much. Of-course the teething gels won't hurt your baby, this is just a different alternative. As far as the white spot you see, I have seen where a tooth is trying to crown through and the tissue or gums get so tight it looks white or do you actually see a "hard" white spot because that of-coarse is tooth structure. I hope this helps, I could go on and on about teeth, if you have any questions on how to take care for little primary teeth you may e-mail me back

It shouldn't be too long now! Teething is very hard on both of you, huh! My youngest just turned 22mths yesterday and he's got 4 white spots where his 2yr molars are coming in and then I'm finally done with teeth!!!! =0) No more teeth issues until my daughter starts to lose her baby teeth in the next couple years! Anyway, when my kids were getting their first teeth like that, they always loved when I would take an ice cube, wrap it in a baby washcloth, and rubber band underneath the ice really tight. Run it under water to moisten it and let them chew away! The cold numbs their gums and the pressure of knawing on the ice feels good to them. I would also give them infants' Motrin before bed and it would really help their teething pain through the night. Good luck!
