My son is teething. First is it normal for the teeth to come in and then go back up?? And second when they are really bothering him he grinds his teeth. Any ideas on how to stop this?

What can I do next?

M....

my son would do this as well. he would clack his teeth together and all sorts of things. he grew out of it. i think he was just "testing out" his new teeth. i would advise not making a big fuss over it, or he may make it a permanent habit. we didn't say anything at all to him and he grew out of doing it all the time by about 13 mos.

hope that helps!

YES!!!!! They can go back up. This is happening to my 13 month old and happened initially at three months. Grinding will go away, but, (and this may be just my daughter) when they come out and go back up, it seems more painful. I've just been doing Hylands tablets and a lot of breastfeeding. Good luck to you and your son : ( Hope its over quickly for him.

The grinding is TOTALLY NORMAL. My son grinded his teeth too and they stop eventually. I think they're just "exploring" these new things in their mouths and finding out all that they can do with them.

No worries!!

My daughter had really tough gums and teething was horrible. The front teeth finally broke through when she acidentally fell and hit her gums on a tv screen. There was blood and it hurt, but low and behold, there were her teeth... We give them all kinds of soft things to chew and it just doesn't do it. I learned the best thing to help with that was crushed ice. She loved biting on it. It helped her break those teeth through, numbed the area a bit so she could bite harder and a few times even "broke open" the area and relieved the pressure. Of course after a lot of biting some pain reliver was needed, but it sure was worth it, it helped the process go faster. But a word of caution, your son may take time getting used to the slippery nature of it and he may choke a bit, but just watch him, he will be a pro in no time. Make sure it's crushed very small, or if he becomes too enthusiastic you can buy those frozen hard fruit pops and let him chew little pieces of that. Be careful of too much teethin gel, I found out too late that that acually toughens the gums and makes it harder for the teeth to come through.
