Teeth Grinding - Tulsa,OK

My boy is almost 12 months old and has 3 teeth. Two top front teeth and one bottom. The other day I heard a clicking coming from his mouth. I think he is grinding his teeth. He doesn't do it at night, but he does it knowingly and we tell him to stop. Should I be worried? Should we go to the dentist?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for the great responses. He is already not doing it as much. We are offering him something to chew on or distracting him in some way when he does it and I think it seams to be working. Thanks again.

kids at this age are getting to be aware of what's in their mouth and most do this just to do it, kind of like exploring it. Chances are, if you pay attention to it, he'll keep doing it. Just don't say anything about it or bring attention to it. You could also give him an appropriate toy to chew when he starts doing it. Just casually offer it to him when he starts grinding.

I have a 7 year old that grinds his teeth a lot. I talked to his pediadontist and he said that it was a normal thing that a lot of kids do. He told me not to worry about it, that they usually outgrow it and just stop on their own. I don't think I'd worry.

My son did that to when he first started getting his teeth. I asked my sister who is a dental hygenist about it and she said the best thing to do is to tell him to stop because you do not want it to become a habit and that it is due to them being new teeth and are experiencing something new and not to worry about it. It did not last to long. However, if he starts doing at night or it continues for a long period (more than just a few weeks) of time you might want to consult a dentist.

has he had his 1st dental visit yet? if not, you should schedule one. it is recommended that kids have their first dental visit around 1 years old.

My daughter (now 2 1/2) did this everytime she was getting a tooth after she got her top teeth. My ped told me that it probably made her teeth that were coming in feel better and thta I should not be concerned unless she still did it after all of her teeth came in or unless she broke one of her teeth. So I would not be to concerned about it yet. Good luck this will pass. Hope this helps you feel a little better about it. Happy holidays!!

My daughter (15 months now) did the same thing when she only had a few teeth too! It didn't last for long though. I think she just thought it was cool that she made a new noise (even though it made me cringe each time). I think it only lasted about 2 or 3 weeks and then she was over it. Hope that helps.

Hey there A.,

My daughter used to do the same thing. It drove me absolutely crazy! Ugh! I called our dentist who said that we shouldn't worry about it. It was just a phase and eventually she grew out of it. Hopefully your boy will be the same. ;)

Good luck to you!

My 3 year old went through a phase where he did that all the time but he has stopped. Your baby probably will too.
