My daughter did that too, and although it makes every parents skin crawl, there really isn't much you can do about it. They get over the novelty of it after awhile and stop on their own.
My nine month old got 6 teeth all in one month. Just the other day I heard him grinding his teeth.. The sound was awful... Is this normal?
Thank you so much... to know that this is normal and even a dentist professional says it is okay.. this makes me feel much better!!

Don't you hate that sound!!!!!
All of my kids ground their teeth to some extent. I think it is fairly normal. I was concerned that they would ruin their teeth but they didn't. When they started to grind I placed my hand on each side of their face and gently rubbed it. It seemed to distract them. You can also offer a pacifier if you use one. After awhile they stopped grinding.
Hi C.,
My daughter did that too. No worries, he is just experimenting. He isn't used to having teeth in his mouth. It won't last long! ;o)
My daughter did the same thing at about the same age. She stopped doing it after about 3-4 weeks.
Mine did this for awhile too. He is just experimenting with his body and enjoying making new sounds. Soon he will find a new skill to concentrate on and forget about his teeth.
Hi
I have nine year old who has been grinding her teeth for years. And yes, it does sound awful! The dentist assured me this was okay especially when she had her baby teeth. They are too young for mouth guards. It also depends where the contact point is on the teeth. Hope this helps!
My 11 month old has been grinding his teeth for a couple months too. I think it's normal. Just something new in the mouth and they're just messing around. I'm not concerned. When I notice him doing it, I just ask him to stop and he does. I hate that sound too!
totally normal. It's like they all of a sudden find them and try all the things they can do with them. I have an 8 month old who has gotten a tooth each week since Christmas and is grinding away on occassion. oh my god it's horrendous, isn't it?
I have a 6 year old who had 8 teeth by this point - her first 4 by the time she was 4 months. She didn't grind her teeth at all... but now she grinds my nerves. (ha)
I am hoping that my son is the opposite! grind teeth a little and be nice to me when he is 6!
good luck.
Yes! It is normal and it freaked me out too. My dentist is wonderful and was quick to put my fears to rest. Call http://www.pediatricdentistry-sanramon.com/ to confirm with dr Rimi. Good luck! I think my son stopped when he was two and a half.
Yes, it's nomral according to our dentist. Dental guards are only an option for adults, not for children, becuase their teeth and mouth are still growing.
C., this is completely normal. Young children will also really grind their teeth while they sleep. He will outgrow it sooner or later. As a dental professional, I have seen this a lot. Some kids will grind so much they will actually wear down their teeth a little. Don't worry unless he starts having pain.

Very normal. that is part of the reason why childrens teeth are so jagged.

My son did that for a while too. I think it's normal. Sometimes I hear him doing that now and he's 2 years old.
I think because the teeth are new they are just figuring out they can do that. I sound horrible and he stopped doing that but everytime he seemed to get a new tooth or was teething he would do that.
Both my kiddos did this, too. Teeth are fun and interesting to little ones. If you think it's causing problems or he is doing it all the time, talk to his doctor or call a dentist. Most likely it's just something he found out that he can do!
If you get a response to this ....please post it or reply to me. My son does the same thing and your right the sound is horrible!
Yes, this is normal. Although it sounds awful, it tends to be a short phase.
