My friends son is 16 1/2. He has been seeing a psychiatrist since he was 5. He has multiple diagnoses.. Autism (mild), OCD, possibly ODD, He also has some brain abnormalities.. It is called tuberous schlerosis..

I was talking to her about what they would do when he is 18. He cant be trusted to make good decisions.. He is in a special class at school and has problems behaving. He steals and lies.

When he is 18 do his parents petition to be his guardian??? Power of attorney?? does he have to be found incompetant??

What can I do next?

If he cant function on his own and handle money and regular daily responsibilites, they need to get him on social security disability... He'll then get a monthly income and can live in a group home surrounded with people like him and mentors to keep them on track, or his parents can still take care of him but have a little income coming in to help with expenses.
I'm a low income apartment manager. I have lots of people like him living here, they cant be left alone because they are vulnerable to people that like to take advantage of them.

She needs to talk to social services. If they aren't involved at this point, they need to be.

Bless her heart - I'm sure she stays up nights worrying about this.

They will have to become his guardians after age 18, so that they can make medical, financial and other decisions for him. I would also contact the state dept of developmental disabilities to put him on a waiting list for adult services. A special needs trust may also be helpful to provide for him financially. Contact your state Parent Training and Information agency (www.nichcy.org, click on state resources, your state and then on parent organizations) for referrals.
