I think a $20 is very generous and would be very much appreciated. I usually give a card made by my child and a $10 gift card.

Homemade cookies are also a great choice.

I think your gift card idea is perfect. I know several teachers and yes, the love cards and crafts made by the kids, but really, can you expect them to keep those things when they are getting dozens every year? And do they really need another candle or bottle of bubble bath? The teachers I know would be thrilled to get a $5 chick fil a card or starbucks card. That is what they really want, we've had this conversation actually. Something for themselves and not about just being a teacher but that won't clutter up their cabinets with a thing they might not use. A card made by your child with a gift card inside is perfect. No guilt for throwing out another craft or candle.

$20 is more than generous.

we usually go in with other parents.. on an end of year gift.. this works great... we end up asking other parents if they want to participate.. and they can give about 10 each.. then buy one really big gift card.. or one visa gift card and one card for dinner... maybe this could be a good idea.. if you know some of the moms... good luck.. the cookies sound nice too.. we also asked the kids to each bring in one flower or a stem with leaves from the garden.. we took the flowers from each kid... before school.. put it together.. and it really looked nice.. with a big bow.. and it was from the kids...

I would not give a teacher money as a gift. If you give a teacher a gift it should be something from the child, like art work, or cookies they helped to make in a nice tin or cookie jar.
