Tablets Vs. Books

So I just finished my first book on a Kindle and I must say I am going back to the library!

I just don't like curling up with a tablet, especially since the computer and phone are such a large part of my life (sad to say).

There's something about crinkling pages and bookmarks!!!

So, who is still into reading real books out there?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I forgot to mention that the Kindle was a gift from my husband, sort of like lingerie. A for him, for her gift! He uses it more.

And yes, my toddler looooves books and I don't want to rush any technology on her. She has her whole life for that!

We have a Nook, a Kindle and the ipad we can read on...

...after reading all 3 of the 'Hunger Games' books on the ipad I came to same conclusion...back to real books for me!

~I read all 3 books in like 4 days and went to bed with such a pounding headache each and every night...took my husband pointing out the fact that it was probably from the reading, duh? I am a HUGE reader and read almost every day, so it wasn't the strain from reading it was the strain from reading off the screen! Yikes!

I refuse to get any sort of e-reader. I love the feel, smell of books and turning pages and putting a bookmark in. I can't give that up. I told my husband that the only way I would ever get one would be if I won one. But even then I probably wouldn't use it much.

I love my Nook, lots of books, one small device. But there is nothing like curling up with a good paper book!

Or a bubble bath, scented candles glass of wine and good book.... certainly can't do that with electronics!

I also like the interactive books they have on the Nook (color) for kids.

I love, love, love the real, tangible book. We will not be getting e-readers in our household anytime soon.

Books are so wonderful. At night, my favorite way to fall asleep is to literally read until I can't. I just can't imagine letting a tablet accidentally fall off the bed. Can't take one into the tub without possibly making a very expensive sacrifice.

There's also something wonderful about sitting together with my son and reading a real book. Our library has great oversize books we've enjoyed. Bigger books allow children to pore over details in pictures and to learn the sequence of 'how to read a book' in our culture, which direction to turn pages, etc.

And there's nothing quite like having a group of kids or preschoolers exploring books on the fly-- we've often brought them to the snack table to augment conversations. I'd much rather spill something on a naturalists book I picked up at Goodwill than a tablet. Besides, our kids need to learn how to use indexes and keep up with books as reference, even if the culture doesn't support it. What happens when there's no Net access?

I love books, and I love visiting libraries. Nothing beats walking in there and searching for books..

...and yes I do own a kindle. I have the older version..I don't like that it does not have a light, and have never really looked into upgrading.

Absolutely. I prefer books. When traveling last summer, I got to listen to SS offer DH his tablet to read a story and then complain that he couldn't read anything else til DH was done. Then it needed to be plugged in. Etc. A book? Open and read. Fold the page if you want to bookmark it. And for DD, there's just something about her being able to explore a page, or a flip up tab or look at a large picture or something fuzzy, etc. She gets so much more out of an actual book.

I think ebooks have their place, but I much prefer paper.

My husband and I both have this fantasy that, when we own a house, we'll have a library with wall-to-wall books on built-in bookcases, maybe even with one of those sliding ladders so you can reach the top shelves. There will be leather chairs and a fire place... Yes, real books for me.

I do! :) I prefer to read a book, because it's easier on my eyes. The light eminating from the computer/ebook/whatever sometimes hurts my eyes/makes them tired. I find the LED ones, that aren't backlit to be even harder to read. Physical books seem easier to reference too, because you don't have to wait for them to turn on, and you don't worry about charging them up. Keep in mind though that it took me a long time to get a cell phone. I still have the original Tracfone, that my son says looks like a walkie-talkie. I finally broke down and got a new flip-style Tracfone with a camera on it last Christmas. I don't text and won't read any texts, so I tell everyone not to text me.

I'm half and half. I travel alot so my e-reader comes in handy to read books to my son as well as my own books when I'm away. But I still check out library books because I read too dang much and let's face it, library books are still free.

I surprised myself by loving e-books-something that I said I would NEVER do. But I read on an IPAD...the Kindle seems like way too small of a screen. The IPAD screen is about the size of a book so its much easier on the eyes.

I love real books but so does my toddler. He drags my stacks all over the house despite trying to foil his efforts. Nothing worse than reaching for your book only to have to go on a toddler driven treasure hunt to find it first. Bless him. My husband bought me a basic Nook for Christmas and I have grown to love it (it took a while for the attachment to stick admittedly). I tried reading off my husband's tablet first and it was awful. I always got headaches. With the Nook I don't have that problem and I can go book shopping at midnight if I want. What a luxury. :) My biggest gripe other than feel/smell - the light. I have to read with a book light which I dislike intensely. I do take my Nook in the tub and so far I haven't dropped it in the water. Ultimately nothing will replace my books but it's nice having instant access to new books/authors at any time of the day.

I LOVE books, real books. My hubby teases me all the time, becuase I would rather read a ratty old worn out hard copy than use my e-reader (also, a gift from him).

Books for me - in fact, mostly library books (though I have been known to impulsively buy almost any time I wander into a bookstore).

One of the comments below made me smile - the one about someone not getting to use the e-reader until someone else was done with it. My SIL had that problem on one of our big family vacations. Her older boys would take it to read and suddenly it didn't matter that she'd loaded it up with tons of books because she couldn't get her hands on it!

I ahve an older Sony Ereader and use it regularly (free checkouts thru the library), but I do real books too.

I like them both!

I own a Nook Simple Touch. The battery lasts for 2 - 3 weeks. I have hundreds of books on it, some mine, some my husbands, and some for the kiddos. Husband uses my old Nook Original.

But at home, our house is covered in books, not to mention the books we left in storage when moving. We both love real books; but we love the ereaders for simplicity. It's nice to be able to bring a whole library with you in a small device. If I finish a book, I move to the next one. I can look up different things from the various health books I read with just a few taps of my finger, very handy when I'm trying to battle my husband on a food choice!

I would never say one is better than the other. There is just different, wonderful reasons for both of them. I will admit though, I love not having to hold giant books open to read them. That cramped my hands so much!

My Nook will NEVER replace the comfort of a real book, ever. The Nook is exceptionally handy when we are traveling though. It's much nicer to take one Nook, instead of ten books!

I like both! Sometimes I will pick up a book other times I will pick up my reader. I like that if there is a book I really want to read and dont want to leave the house I can just pick up my reader. Plus I really like deals so when I see .99 books that I would have otherwise never have read I will download them. Read some great books and found some new authors I really like! Same for books though, found a bunch of books on clearance at Walgreens $1.20 each!
