I just started my 11 1/2 mo. old on some table foods. What is a good menu as far as for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner as far as how much meat, fruit, veggies, and starches he should be getting? Also once he switches to whole milk how much and how often will he drink that? Thanks!

Hi Rachel,

Here is one thing to remember children around this age need the fats, salts, oils and calories as we adults don't so feed him the amount he chooses to eat. He will eat if he is hungry.

Breakfast:
Toast, waffles, biscuits, pancakes, muffins, donuts, cereals, oatmeal.

Lunch: mac and cheese, noodles, soups(I like to crunch up crackers in the soup), homemade lunchables(crackers, deli meat, cheese sticks, fruit cups, a vegetable), carrots, green beans, etc.

Dinner: whatever you are having but cut up smaller and not alot of spices.

Snacks: animal cookies, crackers, fruit, vegetables.

For the milk offer it to him at every main meal(breakfast, lunch and dinner). You can give him juice at snack and offer him water in between the other times. And a glass before bed. W. B.

Breakfast: Cheerios with or without milk, cut up waffles or pancakes, fruit cups
Snacks: Gerber Fruit or Veggie Puffs were my favorite
Lunch: Noodles or pasta of somekind'
Dinner: Just a little bit of what your eating.

I would always buy the little cans of mixed veggies and put those on his tray and they are really soft and kept him entertained while we were eating. I'm not sure how much milk he drinks now but that will pretty much be how much he'll get with the whole milk too. I actually saw on the news yesterday that they are suggesting some babies at age one should go on 2% milk based on their family history of obesity, cholesterol, and heart issues. I wish I would have know that before.

I higly suggest Super Baby Food Book By Ruth Yuron--for all food and nutrition needs to all new moms.
Consider slowly introducing Whole Milk via transition.
If breast feeding and/or formula feeding consider mixing them with Rice and/or Almond and/or Soy Milks first for a few months prior to introducing Cow's Milk. Then after baby is use to other milks alone, then slowly mix other milk's with organic/hormone-free cow's milk. This is the safest way to reduce a risk to dairy and/or lactose allergies.
If you need any other information you may contact me.

My son is 12 1/2 mos old and he eats everything we eat. Until he turned 12 mos old I would scramble an egg yolk for him for breakfast and generally serve it with a slice of toast and some cut up fruit. Now that he is 12 mos old he eats the entire egg.(Egg whites cause food allergies in some babies.) Another product to try is the YoBaby Yogurt. It has all the fats and nutrition a growing baby needs. We do not eat very many sweets in our household so he is used to eating fresh fruits and vegetables with each meal. He is still breastfeeding 2 times a day, and he has about one sippy cup of whole milk/day. Full fat cheese also makes a great snack. Basically he eats everything we eat, we simply try to include more full fat foods into his diet. Avocados are a great source of vitamins, fats, and nuttition. We have taken our son to Europe twice and he has eaten their foods right off the table too. By exposing him to such a varied diet he eats every fruit and veggie we can find, he is an awesome eater who cleans up his plate with every meal. We plan for three meals and two snacks a day. Not sure if this helped or not. Good luck! Every day is a fantastic adventure with a baby!!

Trust me, your life is about to get easier! Of course you want to offer your baby balanced and nutritional choices, but just remember, sometimes babies don't do what we want! ;) For the most part your baby will probably eat what you offer, but don't worry if he goes through phases and denies something he once ate! This is your chance to try new and exciting fruits and veggies and meats and cheeses!

Your baby can basically have whatever you eat even with some spices. Look at wholesomebabyfood.com for a quick list of things that your baby can and cannot eat.

As for ideas, my daughter is 10 months and some of her favorites are: waffles, turkey sausage, oatmeal (warm it with just a little bit of water and it comes out lumpy so they can pick it up with their hands), freeze dried fruit (way better than regular dried fruit b/c it has more nutrients and less sticky), peaches, bananas, plums, string cheese, hamburger meat, and asparagus.

Good luck and have fun!

As far as food for your child, whatever you eat he/she can try also. Just cut everything up really small so your child won't choke. As far as nutrition, if he's eating a little from each food group a day then you are fine. I wouldn't worry so much. Do try to get him to eat fruits and veggies too along with meat. My kids loved their hot dogs and chicken nuggets/patties. They would eat fried chicken and hamburger patties as well as meat loaf and turkey. My kids were eating PB & J when they had enough teeth to chew the sandwich which was about 10 months old. Offer everything you can so he'll develope a taste for a variety of things.
As for the milk, 8 -16 oz a day should be plenty and that can come from milk, yogurt, cheese, any dairy product.
Have fun! And I'm sorry if your child's a girl and I kept calling her a he. Good luck and God Bless.

What we did with our son was just let him taste everything we were eating. He's 1 now and loves everything. Even if he made a face, my husband and I would say "yummy" and eat it too so he would keep it in his mouth. He eats pretty much everything we eat. He loves fruits and veggies and meats and even crab ragoon!! We just make sure to give him small bites and stay close to him in case he does get choked. Remember that sometimes you have to introduce a new food several times before your kiddo will even try it. New textures are strange for them so be patient. He isn't a picky eater at all now and we're so grateful! We're just worried that we can keep enough food around for him because he's such a big eater!
