Swimming Lessons for Son with Autism

I have a 6 year old son with autism, who is built like an 8 year old. I get so frustrated year after year, sending him to regular swim lessons at the community swim classes, where there are 15 kids, 2 teen instructors, and 25 minute lessons. Between the distraction and the lack of individual time, my son has gained no skill in the 3 years he's been there. This year will be his 4th year at "level 1". (See what I mean?) I found a private teacher, but because of his size, her size and because her age, she is unable to handle my son in the water, fearing for his safety and her own. Does anyone know of a private instructor with experience with kids with autism. I feel my time is running out, as he continues to grow. He loves the water, is very willing, but just needs someone to understand his needs.

So What Happened?

Hey Mamas!

Thanks so much for your help! After feeling like I had no where to go Monday night, I see that I have a A BUNCH of options now. We will be having lessons in August, and my son is excited about getting to swim again!

Hi M.,
Check out Australian Swim school. I think there are several locations. We went to the one in Tarzana on Tampa in the Valley. The classes were for only about 4 kids but they may be willing to do some private lessons with your son. They also have male teachers who may be able to handle your son better. You can also do lessons for your daughter there. My son started at 2 1/2.

Good luck!

Hi M.

Funny I was looking swimming lesson last night. At LACC College they give private lessons for $125- 5 lessons of one hour. Ad read, "Overcome your fear of the water thru intensive personalized teachings." It's also one student per instructor. www.lacitycollege.edu/comsvcs. Good luck!

I don't know where you live, but you have to try your local YMCA. I worked at a Y for years and we regularly had children with disabilities and physical challenges. We had children who could not walk. They all had private lessons. Also, have you checked out your local regional center? They will cover the cost for these lessons as well. www.ymcala.org. Good luck.

We have had great success with Conrad Cooper (swim2me.com). While I don't know what his experience is with kids with autism, I do know he has years of experience as a swim instructor. He is unfazed by screaming kids and truly gifted. Give him a call!!

I don't know which part of town you live in, however my son is autistic and he has a fantastic swim teacher here on the Westside. She teaches at her house in a heated pool - Corby is her name and her phone number is 310/391-2195. You must call soon because her time fills up quickly. My son was afraid of the water and now he is a very good swimmer, thanks to Corby.
