I live in Lighthouse Point/Pompano Beach FL and am looking to enroll my 6 month old in swimming lessons. She loves the water and we are in the pool almost every weekend. I really want to start her with lessons asap. Any advice on places that are close to the Pompano Beach area?

What can I do next?

Hi H.,
If you have not already enrolled in lessons or there wasn't availability, visit my website at www.star-swimmers.com for more information about self-rescue swim lessons through ISR. I have openings for lessons.

Hi H.!

I think it is awesome that you want to get your daughter into some sort of swim lessons! That is a great age to start. Last summer when my son was about 7 months old we decided to have him learn to swim with the Infant Swim Resource method. Their statistics are AMAZING (NO child that has EVER learnt this method of swimming has ever drowned, they don’t forget it), and I felt since we had a pool in our back yard I owed it to my son to make sure that my son knew how to save him self should he ever have a accident and fall in. He has such a respect for water and by water I mean every body of water, we could be at the park with a canal close by and he could care less about it as were other kids are drawn to it like a magnet. Also at friends houses he could care less if they have a pool and I know he can safely play around it with not one worry in the world of it being a danger for him…but anyways I can just go on and on about how wonderful this program is…lol! My son too LOVES the water I just had to make sure it was safe for him.

Natalie teaches at the Pompano Aquatic center so I know that is very close to you. Check out her sites and give her a call, she is a great and very patient teacher!!

There is a terrific program called Swim Central that offers Mommy and me classes, and I believe the starting age is 6 months. They offer classes near you at the Deerfield Aquatic Center, off SW 10th St on 6th Ave.

I started my son there at about a year old and he went every year until we moved this year. The classes are fun, inexpensive and effective.

Good luck!

Check with your community center and local library. They will be able to refer you to local swim teachers. Also Am Red Cross certifies, so they should have a list.
At her age, you are going to be in the water anyway, so pick up some tips from Red Cross swim instructions.
Babies are taught to hold their breath while immersed. Imperative that you (or dad or other adult WHO CAN SWIM>>>) are always in the water with the child.
A toddler is taught to hang on to the side, away from the adult, also taught to kick and reach the edge of the pool. Be aware that hanging on to the side may cause scraping of the hands, as most edges are coarse concrete, not tile...
Wishing you a pleasant summer
Blessings, S.

I'm taking ISR as well with my 14 month old, it's a great program! And I think one of the few that starts as young as 6 months. Be sure to watch the video on the bottom right of infantswim.com, pretty incredible what they can teach these babies. I encourage you to observe someone around you babies age in class before you sign up...
