Surgery in the Morning...

Hi Ladies,

My son is three now and he is having surgery on his eyes in the morning. He has many problems when it comes to his eyes. Crossing in both one far worse than the other, bad depth perception, and on top of that not very good vision in general.
My fiance and I have been taking him to the Eye Doc for over a year now as soon as we noticed the problem. On our very first visit I was told that he was going to need Surgery but they were going to try and improve some of the other problems first. So Surgery Day has come and tomorrow is the Big Day.
His other problems have improved, his vision is Alot better than it was and they seem to have fixed the depth perception through patching and the use of a Prisim.
So in the morning he is having Eye Muscle Strengthing, two muscles in each eye are going to be tightened. His doctor has told me that this is not a one surgery fix all sort of thing.(we have gotten second and third opinions, all say the same thing) The Doctor told me that there is a 20 percent chance he will need another surgery within a year and a 90 percent chance he will need another surgery with in the next 25 years.
Does anyone know anything about this Surgery, as in they know someone or they themselves have gone through the same thing? Any information would be helpful. More so about the multiple surgery possibilites and things to expect during recovery time.
I was told he would be out of it for about a week and there is going to be some blood dripping from the eyes for the first day or so..
Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks a Bunch Ladies,

He had Surgery this morning and that went really good. He was in alot of pain for the first couple of hours at the hospital but I think now he is more irritated with his face then he is in pain now. He is super swollen and his eyes look like two blood clots. Only problem we have had since we got home was putting the medicine which is Eye Drops Four times a day for 21 days, needless to say he was not happy.
So for the next couple days we are going to vegg out on the couch and watch a ton of amazing Disney Movies.
For all the ladies that are about to go through the same situation with your little ones.. Good Luck!

Hi Krystal,
I hope your little guy's surgery has gone well. I had two strabismus surgeries- one when I was four and another when I was 20. If they can fix the crossed eyes early enough, your son may be able to fuse (use both eyes at the same time). If not, the brain shuts one image off at a time and he will see only from one eye at a time. I hope you will be able to- as I as mine was fixed too late and I did not get both eyes to work together. It has made sports involving a ball more than a little challenging. The surgery I had at 20 further corrected the muscles and was largely cosmetic. I had very bloodshot eyes for about a month and a little bruising around the eyes. The most painful part of the post-surgery for me was turning my head or anything where my eyes needed to move quickly. I had a little scar tissue on the white of my eye which lasted longer, but after a month or so, I think I was back to normal. I had my last surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Clinic in LA. If he needs further surgery, I would highly recommend going there- even if just for another opinion.
I hope this helps,
S.

I have 3 kids. My oldest has had more eye surgeries than I can count. I am guessing btwn 6-10. My son had a brain tumor-so eye surgery was no big deal. (cancer puts everything in perspective). I wonder who your surgeon is? We have been to just about all the eye people in So Cal. There will be VERY little blood. He will have drops and/or ointment for the eyes for up to 2 weeks. He may get lid droop after the surgery. you will notice an improvement immediatly! Try not to let him rub his eyes, there will be stitches, they disolve on their own. You will have follow up appts. and a secondary surgery won't happen soon. The dr will want to see how they improve, likely, a year from now. i wonder if you plan on looking for another surgeon in Texas? Or returning for follow up?

Hi Krystal, my husband had the same surgery done when he was 3 years old. He had many other issues with his eyes. He had one surgery at 6 months and another at 3. he is now 27 years old and his eyes are still going strong. his mom said he was groggy for a few days but then back to being a crazy boy. my son has inherited his eye condition and will too be having surgery in a few months. good luck and i hope all goes well.

My friend's son had this done about 6 months ago. The lttle guy, 2 1/2 at the time, really didn't have any problems at all. He was groggy from the anethesia the first day. His eye was teary but by day 3 he was busy being a two year old boy. I think she just gave him motrin for discomfort. Hope it all goes well.

Hi Krystal,

I had this surgery done to my left eye when I was 7 years old. They told my parents I would need to have another surgey in the next 15-20 years to re-tighten the muscles. I am now 37 and have not needed a second surgery. I don't have much vision in my left eye (they think this was caused by something in utero), but the muscle correction is still working after 30 years! I do remember wearing an eye patch for the first day or so, but I don't remember being in any pain.

Good luck to you and your little boy.

J.
