Strep That Won't Go Away!

My 3 year old was diagnosed with strep on Tuesday, we were sent home with a round of antibiotics. 48 hours later we still had a fever. I called her doctor's office back on Friday, they told me to stop using the antibiotic we had and they had called in a new one. Friday and Saturday she still had fever. Sunday she did not have one all day. So I sent her to preschool on Monday. She had a great day at school! Tuesday morning she woke up with a fever, so I took her to my parents for my mom to keep her. Today is Wednesday and her fever has still not broke. So I took her back to the doctor's office. They tested for RSV, flu, and strep and all came back negative. They told us to keep giving her antibiotic and if fever had not broke by Friday to come back in so they can do bloodwork. Any suggestions on what could be going on with my little girl?

What can I do next?

Sounds to me like she needs rest. When I am sick if I try to bounce back the next day after my fever is over it just makes me feel bad again. She needs to take it easy for the next week. I would guess that she is run down and now she has caught something else and her body is fighting it off. If she tested negative for strep then it is something else. Antibiotics might not do anything you know...only if the fever is caused by a bacterial infection. But she may now have a fever due to a virus (which antibiotics do nothing for)...such as one of the many flu strains or even a milder virus that still can cause a fever. I got the flu last year and it took a whole week of off and on fevers...and then another week of feeling run down and weak.

I agree she needs rest. But one question: when you say "fever", what are you talking about? 99? 104?

It sounds like the strep did go away, since the latest test was negative, but it sounds like she's still getting back to health. Give her fluids, let her rest, and keep her out of school for a few days.

I agree with Gidget. I have found that if I didn't give mine that extra day, it came right back.

A lot of times when little ones are sick they tend to get things back to back because their immune system isn't as developed as ours. What looks like a continual illness may be 2 different things. Maybe she was feeling a little better so you sent her to school on Monday (I would have done the same thing since she was fever free the day before) where she was exposed to something else and got sick again. I refer to places that little ones gather as germfests because they pick up everything.

This isn't a judgement, but when I read this (just from my own personal experience) when I saw you sent her back to preschool on Monday, I know mine would have become run down from having fun, and they'd get worse again.

So I am guessing (based on mine) that's what happened. Strep really takes it out of them. Even without fever I used to keep them home that extra day (past when they seemed fine)

Hope she gets better soon

She might really just need rest. Even if she is fever free for a day, it can be necessary to keep resting for another day or two. It's a real pain in the butt when you work outside the home, but sometimes it;s just what you have to do. If you don't give her enough time to rest, it really can end up taking her longer to recover.

Let her rest today and tomorrow. It might make a difference by Friday.

My mom had strep for over a year...my daughter had it for over a month. As soon as my daughter finished the antibiotic she would start with strep symptoms again. The third antibiotic finally worked.

I think your daughter just needs rest and hopefully she will be better by Friday.

Sounds like something viral...any time my little girl runs a fever like that for that length of time it turns out to be viral and just has to run its course. Just have her drink plenty and rest a lot. Good luck!
