Is it possible to have white spots on the back of your tonsils that has been swollen over 3-4 days now without fever, and it not be strep throat? Are there other things that might cause this. Someone complained of this and gave my child something to eat from the same thing they were eating with this "condition" and I am worried about my child getting sick. Should I be. I am not in a position right now to seek medical attention.

What can I do next?

It is possible that it is not strep. But if your child runs a fever and develops a sore throat-you must take them-strep is a formidable opponent and will attack the kidneys, heart or even the brain-it must be treated with antibiotics given at near precise intervals and a follow-up done to make sure the treatment was effective-if your child needs help-go to the ER.

A nurse friend recently told me white spots mean strep but I had sore throats all the time as a kid and remember that white spots do not necessarily mean strep. I think if they did, it'd be much easier for people to know they have it before the test. I remember white spots are a sign of an infection but not necessarily strep. Strep really really hurts typically. So if it's not getting worse and causing a ton of pain, I think it likely isn't strep... (for what that's worth.) Good luck with it.

I had a sore throat for over a month in a half and just figured it was post nasal drip a cold and then strep. Went to the doctor when I just couldn't take it and was starting to get concerned. No strep, but Dr. gave antibiotics and I was fine withing the week. May be some infections other than strep.

Strep doesn't always cause a fever or pain. The only way to know for certain what's going on is to get a strep test.

I always got pus on my tonsils and throat -- even so bad they would sometimes break open and bleed - and I needed antibiotics. It was NEVER Strep!

The last time it happened my doctor almost had me admitted into the hospital I was so bad off (trouble breathing my throat was so swollen). It was NOT Strep! But I still needed antibiotics!! They usually give me a shot right in the office and strong ones in pill form. One time I even needed corticosteroids.

So what was it this last time? The bacteria was Moraxella catarrhalis.

When I started college I remember the very stupid doctors at the clinic saying they would not give antibiotics if it was not Strep. They were firm - if was not strep "it must be viral".... ummmm... no! And they could have killed me! I'd have to go elsewhere and every other doctor would say something like "OH MY GOD!!!" and give me a shot of penicillin on the spot!
