Strep Throat Problems ??

Ok - I have to ask a follow up question to my recent question regarding my nine year old sons off and on fever. He tested positive for strep about three weeks ago - no sore throat - just high fever, headaches, neck ache, and some stomach pain. Took antibiotics and better for about a week and a half. Spiked a fever of over 102 Saturday before last and has had an off and on fever for a week now. Not getting that high again but between 100 - 101 at least every other day. No other real complaints - just tired and not feeling good when the fever hits. Went to the doctor yesterday and the doctor examined him and did another strep test - again positive. He said it showed a "faint" line - not sure what that means. Does anyone know if that means that not a lot of strep bacteria was present - could it be some of the "dead" bacteria still there? When I asked if the strep would cause him to have a non consistent fever - off and on - he sort of shrugged his shoulders like he wasn't too sure but said that we would do one more round of antibiotics and if it still came back we would go from there. Has anyone has issues with strep being positive with no other "normal" symptoms of strep and any issues with a fever that comes and goes for such a long period associated with strep? I know this was a long question - but thanks for any input you can give me. We did have an issue this time last year where he went to the doctor for a totally other situation - no fever, sore throat, etc - and he tested positive for strep. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone - we are working on the next round of antibiotics. There was one response related to the risk of so many antibiotics - that is one of my concerns but we will see how this round goes. I don't think the doctor was trying to blow me off - he is a doctor in the office of our original doctor and he has always been honest and very thorough with my sons problems. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced just an on and off fever before. I will definitely switch out the toothbrush. Thanks again everyone - it is nice to have some support and others to throw thoughts of off. Thanks!

Your Doctor may need to prescribe a different medicine, something stronger to knock it out. I just had this happen with my son. He finished the 10 day course of Amoxicillan, and within a week, was back at the Dr.s office. She had to prescribe a stronger med. Or, as something to note & ask your Dr. (who may or may not know, because he seems clueless), some people are carriers of strep and never really get symptoms, or if they do, it's rare. Good luck!

Sounds like your son is just having troubles completely fighting it off, his body is going back and forth fighting it hence the on & off fever. Hopefully the second round of antibiotics will take care of the issue. As one of the other moms said that for some the antibiotics do not work after awhile, in which case they will look into removing the tonsils. All you need is the bacteria to have strep symptoms sometimes happen and sometimes not, I usually get strep and only have a sore throat with white patches on my tonsils (usually no fever or other noticeable symptoms).

Oh and I might go to a different doctors, I hate it when doctors can not answer simple questions... strep is pretty cut and dry, it is not hard to answer questions about it. This doctor could have answer it seems that the strep is still there, less then last time, but still there lets try a different antibiotics. If that does not take care of the issue in 10 days please come back and we will figure out a new game plan.

be sure to replace his toothbrush and toothpaste - he could have reinfected himself if you didn't. If you keep his toothbrush in a drawer - disinfect the drawer. The drawer problem happened to a friend of mine. Replace/clean everything on day 2 or 3 of the antibiotic. Day 1 is too soon.
I had strep once that showed up only as a sinus infection - no sore throat. And people can be carriers - no symptoms they just pass the infection to others. Sometimes my son needs a stronger antibiotic for strep - ampicillin doesn't always work for him.

My nephew, 4, had strep recently and also required another 10 day of antibiotics...so it does happen.

My oldest daughter had strep all the time as a child. With a fever, without, with a sore throat, without. Skin rash, no rash, Stomache, no stomacheache, and any combo of these symptoms. The faint line may mean there is just a few strep bacteria that were captured, like having a faint line on a prego test. Still means you are prego. You son still has strep. Make sure he takes all the antibiotic as ordered. You could ask your doctor to test your son to see if he is a carrier. My doc did that for my daughter. She waited until several weeks after the last dose of antis, then re-tested for strep. If it's positive then, when she had no symptoms at all, then it meant she was a carrier. But it was negative, so no carrier.
As for your docs response to the fever question, hard to say if related to the strep or a virus. I don't think he was blowing you off. He did provide more anti's.
Good luck,
R.

Yes, you can have strep without the classic symptoms. My son has had strep twice this year within a short period of time. First time, normal symptoms (fever, red and sore throat, fatigue, "marbles in throat" sound). Took him to the doctor. In office strep test came back negative. Doctor said he exhibited classic strep signs, so she took another test which was sent to outside lab. After a three-day wait, came back positive. Second time he had strep, there were no symptoms other than the "marbles in his throat" sound when he talked (no fever, no sore throat, no fatigue, etc.). Since there were no other classic symptoms, I thought it was just a head cold with stuffy nose - until he vomitted about 5 days after the initial throat symptom appeared. Something in my mind clicked that it could be strep and the vomitting was somehow related to the strep. I took him to the doctor. She looked at him and said he didn't have the classic symptoms for strep, not even a red throat. She told me the "throaty" sound was from post-nasal drip and the vomitting was probably a slight case of stomach flu. I insisted she swab him for strep anyway. Sure enough, it came back positive. She mentioned the possibility that my son could be a carrier for the bacteria since these two cases were a little over two months apart and the last not having the classic symptoms. She said that if he came down with it again within a short period of time, we would test him for being a carrier and then talk about what action to take (e.g., she mentioned removing his tonsils as one possibility). So far so good. He hasn't had strep again. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, Strep is nothing to play around with. I had strep as a child that went undetected. Always felt tire, and listless. When my parents took me to the doctor for my tiredness, the doctor ran tests, and I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever, which can cause a rheumatic heart, or rheumatoid arthritis. I have the latter. I didn't have a sore throat, nor run a fever. After my tonsils were removed, the symptoms went away, but the damage was done. At age twenty-one I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I suggest you get a second opinion, and don't put it off any longer. Strep can lie dormant in your tonsils for years, then when you get overly tired, and your immune system is compromised, it becomes active again. I suggest you get your son to another doctor as soon as possible. Your present physician doesn't seem to be taking this strep seriously.

I know you don't have a lot of choices for medical care in Nineveh, but what doctor are you currently seeing? I used to know several of the physicians in that area and can make recommendations if needed.

It sounds like either the original strep infection was not fully killed by the original antibiotic that your son took.
However, the lack of a sore throat is very suspicious to me. did they check any lymph nodes? Has he also had weight loss? Waking up with night sweats? A lot of other things are often misdiagnosed as infections - the positive indication of strep is usually 100% on target.

What happens with a bacterial infection is that usually the weakest antibiotic is recommended in hopes it will knock-out the strep bacteria. As long as it's taken as prescribed, it may do the trick. However, if even a few of the strep bacteria survive, they may be resistant to that medication and create a different, more powerful infection that requires a stronger medication to treat it.

I'd keep digging and seeing if there are other doctors you can visit for another opinion. There are 2 offices in Edinburgh, 1 in Trafalgar and 1 in Morgantown (plus many, many good doctors in Columbus/Franklin).

Good luck.

I just got over strep throat about 2 weeks ago. I'm prone to getting them for some reason. One thing you need to do once you get on the antibiotic is to replace your toothbrush. The Strep bacteria can live on it and once the antibiotic wears off you can become reinfected. This is probably what happened to your son.

I've seen the line before with a strep test the doctor showed it to me. The 10 minute strep test is like a prenancy test. There is a stick and if you see a line, the test is positive. So when he says a faint line, I'm assuming, that's the line he is talking about. I'm concerned that your doctor shrugged a question off.

My son had his tonsils out last year because he had strep 6 times between Oct 08 and March 09. I caught it from him one of those times and I had it again last month. I don't get it, but my son never acted very sick with it. He would have a low grade fever and a stomach ache. The dr said that is normal. He said the pain from the throat is displaced, plus the stomach hurts from swallowing some of the bacteria. Me, I thought I was going to die. When I get strep, I get an awful sore throat, chills so violent that my neck hurts for 2 weeks after and the headache is so bad that the pressure from laying it on a pillow hurts too much. I have to sleep sitting up in the lazy boy for a week. Anyway, we rarely had more than a faint line show up on the test (which looks oddly similar to a pregnancy test... a faint line is still positive). Because my son had it so often, I was able to learn the early warning signs and get him to the dr right away. Faint line or not, it still needs to be treated. Since the occurrences for your son are so close together, it sounds like the antibiotics did not work well. He may need to try a different and/or stronger antibiotic. And ditto on the toothbrush!

I have a friend whos kids have no other symptoms like your son, my kids breath will smell like a cat died and they will throw up. It could be that the fever is that his body is trying to fight this and just can't. Make sure you throw out the tooth brushes and tooth paste and use the one time use of a cup rule. Even the bathroom cups need to be paper. It might not be the greener option but it is the best why to get ride of it. Also if he is in school make sure he is washing his hands when getting in the door.
We have had more problems this year with this than in the past and I think it is because my daughter has been in the school environment. Also make sure if you have a dog to keep the dog from licking him, the dog can be the carrier. We had a dog one time that was the carrier.
But in the long of it yes I have heard of this.
