I am full of Joy and Happiness and I wanted to share...My son had a hearing test on Friday. He had a Cochlear Implant implanted in December 09' and his second ear done on July 23rd 2010. He is now hearing at NORMAL range!!! He was tested and hearing better than my husband in the sound proof booth. He is bilingual, learing how to use ASL and speak, my husband and I as well. His strength and determination has exceeded some adults I know and he is only 5 years old. I am a very proud Momma. He always showed a strong desire to speak and would get frustrated when he couldn't. He has come so far and I love him so much! Way to go kiddo, your gonna be something BIG!!
I would LOVE to hear any stories you Mommas want to share Big or Small about your children. What you feel so proud of watching them overcome/ accomplish. Please keep the positives flowing! Have a wonderful day!

What a nice post to read!!! Good job to your son and you and your husband!!!
It seems that those who are faced w/ big challenges in life tend to succeed more, are much more determined and grateful. My kids are still quite young, so we don't have big success stories YET. But I am proud of them and their sweet nature!!!
Have a great day :)

You have a remarkable son. Thanks for sharing your story. My nephew had a stroke when he was 2 1/2. He was paralyzed on one side and could not even roll over or sit up. This was a little over a year ago. He is now walking with the help of a special leg cast. He is even able to peddle a bike. He showed such determination throughout all his therapy. It was a slow road back but he was so inspiring to watch. I am so proud of him. He taught all of us in my family how to push through frustration and fear to accomplish your goal. He probably will always have to wear the cast. It is hard to watch sometimes because his friends will take off running and he can't run. True to his spirit though he doesn't give up and eventually catches up to them to join in the fun.

Congrats to your son and your family. I have walked in your shoes. My son is 15 and had a congenital bilateral profound loss. He got his cochlear implant @ 2 yrs. old. It took a lot of hard work to teach him what the sounds meant. We started with sign language and quickly switched to cued speech at 5 yrs. old as soon as we found out about how well it works to help reading and writing English. It takes only 2 weekends to learn, and then it's just building fluency. My son speaks very well, has been talking on the phone for years. We did take him out of Montgomery County public schools because they didn't meet his needs. He is now home schooled and taking his second year of Japanese. He is on his second alphabet. We know many people who have 2 implants and are thrilled as well.

Good job. Keep up the ASL especially since spoken English is everywhere, ASL isn't. "If you don't use it, you lose it." I commend you on making sure your son has two languages. Oftentimes I hear of CI professionals saying don't sign but evidence shows otherwise that ASL is not detrimental to language development. It HELPS! (My son has one CI just activated last month, he is now 15 months old and was born Deafblind. CI will help him gain a distance sense than have only impact sense.... that he must touch, taste to know what's up.)

Last May younger son earned his black belt in karate after 5.5 years in training . . . it was so tough for him but he stuck it out and did it.

Congrats to your son - I can only imagine what a wonderful blessing he is.
