My daughter is 13 months. About three days ago she had a small red area on her upper arm at the end of her shoulder. We didn't see a bite in the middle. Thought maybe it was a hive but no more developed.(She does have food allergies) Now it is larger(the size of a half dollar) and still clearly red and maybe a little puffy. She doesn't seem bothered by it. Any ideas? Do I need to take her somewhere? I'm thinking of just giving it more time to see what happens.

Can't believe how many responses I got! Thanks for your concern. I did some research on ringworm and lyme disease. It didn't look like either of those. Just to be sure, we saw the pediatrician a couple days ago. She said she sees a lot of unusual skin things in early spring with more sun exposure that usually go away quickly. She wants me to call in a week to let her know how it's doing. Right now it is just a red area that looks kind of like sunburn or a bug bite. If it becomes more like a bullseye, then we may test for lyme's. A couple weeks will make the blood work more clear for lyme's anyway. Thanks again.

The rash sounds like Ringworm. My son had the same red circle rash on his face once. It was ringworm and he had to take antibiotics. You should take her to see her doctor.

Is there a white spot in the middle or is it completely red? If completely red I would suggest eczema and you can email me for the only things that have worked for my sons. If there is a white spot in the middle, I would say it is ringworm and you need to use an antifungal on it like Lotrimin a couple of times a day. If it's puffy, I am guessing that is what it is. My oldest had that and leaving it alone did nothing. I had to use the cream.

Go to the doctor. It is better to find out that it is nothing than to be wrong. If it is something more concerning, sitting around and waiting to see what happens could be risky. Especially since it is growing. Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious!

a friend of mine's daughter had a very similar thing happen, it continued to grow and when she took her to the DR she found out it was limes disease from a tic bite.. i'd take her to the pedi to be sure..

P., my daughter had the same thing and it turned out to be a strawberry hemangeoma (excuse the spelling). If it is they will watch it and possibly do laser surgery to remove it if it gets too big. My daughter is now 25 and still has it, only now it is flat and still pink. Hers is on her chest, at the xyphoid process so she can cover it up. Talk to your pediatrician and see what he/she says. Let me know how you make out.

I would think ringworm but to be sure whatever it may be, have a consult w/ baby's doctor - definitely. Dont' take any chances on something that even seems so benign- especially when child is so young!
I was thinking the same thing - ringworm. Dana is right, very easy to treat but very contagious and if she is in daycare they need to be notified.
A Dr will prescribe something like Lotromin (athletes foot stuff) all those things are pesticides. If you have access to a Nature Store (Wegmans has a nice Naturals area) get some Melaleuca oil. Its a natural fungicidal and that will work without having a pesticide absorb into your babies bloodstream.
Look at the grade of the oil, if the label says it has mineral oil in it, not a good one. You want the pure stuff, the further the Terpinene & Cineole properties are apart the purer the oil. (ex T36 & C7)
Take her to the doctor. It could be a spider bite. My son had one on the bottom of his foot. He had to be put on meds. Take her soon since it got worse. I wouldn't wait.
if it looks like a bullseye - clear center and red circle around it- that is changing - have her checked for lymes disease which is a result of a deer tick bite. deer ticks are so small- like the size of a poppy seed. dont wait if it fits this description because the rash will go away without treatment but the lymes wont. antibiotics handles lymes.
Could be a tick bite. But I'm thinking it might be PittoriosisRosia (don't know if I spelled that right). I had this when I was young....it starts as one big red spot and then after a few weeks or so other spots appear, but never as big as the first. I did go to the doctor for it, but I don't remember the treatment other than letting it run its course...like chicken pox.
Search on the web for Pit.Rosia or just Rosia and see what you come up with. I would go to the doctor though...just in case it was a tick bite and she has Lyme.

This sounds def like ring worm. if you don't get the proper cream, it will spread. wash your hands after you touch it, because it is catchy. my son had this last year. good luck.
Maybe it's a mosquito bite? My daughter had something similar last year over the summer, and they didn't bother her either. Never scratched them or complained about being itchy. They went away on their own. (I, however, was scratching like crazy-definitely mosquito bites for me!)

If the area is a red ring without any redness inside, it sounds like it could be ring worm. Look up ring worm on your computer and see if it looks like that. If it is the Dr. will give you some ointment and it will go away. Until keep it covered as it is very contagious. Thanks.
Take your child to a doctor and have this check out as soon as possible. A strange red circle is the first sign of Lyme disease.

any chance it is ringworm? Ringworm is usually red and circular and grows without treatment. Treatment is usually just a topical cream and starts working immediately.
Please take her to the doctor´s. Tick bites typically look like bull`s eyes, but not always and lime`s disease is quite dangerous. An expert will know better what you should do. Use a perminant marker to circle the edges of the area as well so you can better judge its progression.

All five of my children got solid mounds that got larger on different parts of the body. They were spider bites. Common spiders in your area may be the culprit as they are not always seen in kids rooms. My kids have sensitive skin and get rashes from all sorts of things. When my girls were smaller they would get big welts size (Half dollar size) bites from misquitos. If it is all red now do watch out for it turning bigger and becoming a ring. When my son had lymes disease it started out as a reg bug bite size then grew to fist size and became a ring, never saw a tick on him. I had taken him to the doc 3 times in 2 weeks before they diagnosed him correctly. I kept bugging the doc. I would consult your doc as they may not be able to tell at this point what it is. You may have to watch it.

Definitely take her to doctor. I don't want to alarm you, but the description sounds like a lyme tick bite, in which case after a while it will just go away. So, get her checked thoroughly now.

If she has been outside or around animals it is a possibility that it might be ringworm. I would take her to the doctor.
if it's shaped like a ring, darker around the outside of the circle, this sounds like it could be a tick bite and it could be lymes I would get it looked at right away. better safe then sorry!
look for other lighter patches, if they develop, especially on her back/sides/front/shoulders, could be pityriasis rosacea, not at all sure if thats the spelling, my son had it, the first patch is called the herald patch and its the biggest, then others follow on the top part of they body, typically the area that would be covered by a turtleneck t-shirt. it goes away, sometimes takes a long time, but no big deal.
Is it possible she was bitten by a tick? You might want to have a doctor make sure it isn't Lyme disease or another tick-bourne illness. Just a thought...don't want to make you panic. Better safe than sorry.

My second guess would be infantile eczema (which doesn't look like what an adult would typically think of as eczema), especially since you mentioned the food allergies.
Either way, I'd definitely take her to the Ped., simply b/c it's getting bigger.
Take her to the Pediatrician ASAP! it could be lyme. if so, you need to catch it now. he will probably put her on antibiotics for 30 days. untreated Lyme is very very bad. have her checked.
Is the whole thing red? Or, is it a red ring and her normal skin color in the center? If the whole thing is red I'm inclined to think it's a bug bite that she's having a stronger reaction to. If it's a red ring, I'm inclined to think ring worm. Which is a fungus. It's harmless, but contagious and hard to get rid of. You'd want to nip it in the bud.
Have her seen by her doctor. It may be a tick bite in which case she will need antibiotics to treat Lyme Disease, or it could be ringworn, a treatable fungal infection. Only your doctor will know for sure.

Excema? My boys get circle patches on their bodies when they have an excema flare up that usually get bigger before they get smaller after treatment.
My son had Lyme's. If the rash gets bigger than you are describing and looks like a bull's eye - call the doc. ASAP. Observe any other behaviors too i.e. waking in middle of night, crankiness, soreness.
CALL YOUR DOCTOR!! Don't take any chances. It's worth the phone call. It could be anything and if it's getting larger that's not a good sign.
If it is Lyme disease, it must be treated right away with antibiotics or your child could get chronic lyme disease which is horrible. My mother has had chronic lyme disease for 17 years and she has a whole range of very bad side effects, and it is untreatable, and not covered by insurance. A circular rash is the sign of Lyme.
could be lyme, as the circles aren't always around the bites. could also be ringworm (just a fungus- easily treated with cream). HOWEVER, SHE MUST GO TO THE DOCTOR just in case.....
Definitely take her to your pediatrician or a dermatologist, my kids have had similar rashes, they were a fungal infection that had to be treated. But, it also sounds like ringworm or many other conditions that have the same effect. Have her checked for sure.
I don't have any advice, but my daughter had something similar (in the same place) a couple of days ago. It looked like a huge mosquito bite, but again, didn't bother her. It started out like a bug bite, but grew over two or three days to the size of a silver dollar, then faded and went away. Didn't appear to be a tick bite or ringworm. I'm curious to see what other people post. Let me know if you find out!

See DOCTOR ASAP. If it's lyme from a tick bite it can cause severe problems to her nervous system if not taken care of immediately. If something else, such as ringworm (which is surprisingly more common than most parents realize), that should also be treated as soon as possible. Regarding Lyme - that ring will not last long, so the longer you wait the less chance the doctor can diagnosis it. Also, it's important to know that MOST doctors MISDIAGNOSE Lyme disease, especially if you're not in an area with frequent cases. Unfortunately, the misdiagnosis is that one DOES NOT have it. If it were my child I WOULD INSIST on a lyme disease test (they'll have to take blood), and repeat the test 4-6 months later, as it can recur or remain dormant for a period of time. I live in an area where tick bites are common & lyme disease big concern. With this disease, it's ALWAYS best to over check than undercheck. It's a serious disease if left undiagnosed.
