Likely it will come back. If they make you that sick, call the Dr and ask for different antibiotic. Good luck!
I went to the gyno the other day. I have a UTI..He gave me antibiotics, dosage 2 pills a day for 7 days. They make me very sick to my stomach, so after 3 pills, I stopped taking them. The infection appears to be gone, but I know I am not supposed to stop taking them. Do you think the infection will come back? I can't stand that sick feeling.
Likely it will come back. If they make you that sick, call the Dr and ask for different antibiotic. Good luck!
The infection will likely come back if you do not take the full recommended dose of antibiotics for the entire length of time. If you are experiencing severe side effects, call the Dr. back and ask them for an alternative medicine. Is it Bactrim? I had terrible side effects from that regardless if I had a full stomach when I took them..Their are many alternative medications for a UTI. Cipro is a good one. So, call the Dr.! Good luck!!
Why didn't you just call to get a different antibiotic prescribed? Seems like the most obvious course of action here.
Are you taking the pills with a meal, or after eating? I'm sure you know that taking them on an empty stomach will lead to feeling sick.
You should have contacted the doctor for an alternate antibiotic.
Unfortunately, stopping antibiotics BEFORE the full amount is gone just strengthens the remaining bacteria... they were able to resist the first onslaught of the antibiotic, and breed more bacteria that are somewhat resistant....
This is how the "super bacteria" get started.......
"What is antibiotic resistance?
Taking antibiotics inappropriately can lead to antibiotic resistance, a potentially dangerous situation in which infection-causing bacteria become immune to the effects of certain antibiotics. This leaves your health care provider with fewer, often more expensive, drug options when serious bacterial infections strike in the future. A few kinds of resistant bacteria are untreatable."

This particular infection may come back, and even worse, since you quit taking them so early.
Call the doctor and explain how it affected you.
Some antibiotics CAN be taken with a meal, others must be on an empty stomach.... be sure you are also taking them correctly for best effectiveness.
Of course it will come back. You were given a schedule to follow and didn't follow it. UTI's are one of the worst infections to deal with and get rid of. Most antibiotics need to be taken with food and will disrupt your stomach regardless. Take a few bites, take pill, finish your meal and drink lots of water. If it still bothers your stomach then you call your Dr, and ask him for something else. At this stage of the game, you will have to ask for something else anyway as Gamma is right on the bacteria immunity. Get that taken care of, because they are nasty infections that lead to uglier things.
You need to finish the meds, however, if the meds are making you sick call the doctor as there may very well be a different one they can prescribe.
The infection isn't actually gone, you have to know that. It's only the symptoms started to dissipate because of the antibiotics. It will only continue to get better if you continue taking them.
Do you take them plenty of water and food? Have you told your doctor that the pills make you feel sick and to please give you something else?
I urge you to call and talk with your doctor. He will probably prescribe a different antibiotic.
Contact your gyno and tell them about the side effects. They make have something else that will work better. Did you take them with food? Many antibiotics must be taken with food, which also helps block the nausea.
The infection is almost definitely not gone, only the "weak" germs got killed off. That's why it's so important to finish out the dosage. By not finishing the job, the weak germs die and the stronger ones keep right on going.
yes it will most likely come back. If you were only off by a day, then maybe not, but you only took it for 3 of the 7 days. Do you take pro biotics at all? Did you ask your dr. about trying a different antibiotic? If you take antibiotics and then stop and the infection comes back, then you have to take more, and that's how people start to become resistant to them. It's very important to finish them. Trust me, I've learned from experience!
I'm not convinced your infection is actually gone. It was clearly up but if you stopped taking the pills it'll come back full strength.
As others said, if the antibiotics are making you sick call the doctor. Not sure if you can get in touch with him on the weekend though. When did you stop taking this anyway? Did you just stop taking it today? If so, could you just grin and bear it and continue taking them until Monday?
It sounds like the same 7-day antibiotics they had me on before for a sinus infection and they were making me vomit. I called the dr. and he said continue taking them even though they make you sick. Of course, my situtation is proably different than yours in that I'm allergic to most antibiotics out there and will develop an allergic reaction to other antibiotics they put me on so a drug senstivity as in this case wasn't enough reason for my dr to pull me off or switch the prescription.
Either way you need to be taking something and taking these even if they make you sick to your stomach is better than going withou them.
Added - do you drink cranberry juice? That's good for helping prevent UTI's. Not the stuff full of sugar - get it at the health food stores. Talk to someone (not GNC) at a good health food store and start using it. Always go void your bladder after intercourse - that helps prevent UTI's. You also need to wear cotton crotches in your panties, and don't take bubble baths. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...

Gamma is right. You're shooting yourself in the foot. Please call the doctor's office and ask for a different antibiotic and don't stop it this time.
UTI's can be insidious. I have a friend who passed out because of one, and she hurt her foot in the fall and damaged a nerve. Now she has a "dropped foot" which has caused her SO much pain for 3 years that she has to use pain pills every day. She can no longer drive a car, either. I think she would have thrown up every day for 10 days X 4 to have not had this happen to her.
Please get rid of the UTI regardless of your stomach's sensitivity to the meds.
Dawn
What has happened is most likely that the "bugs" are now building up an immunity to that antibiotic. When they start showing up again in the next few days this antibiotic won't work anymore and you'll have to go get a different one.
How were you taking the pill? With food? Before eating? Take a few bites then take the pill then finishing the meal? Sometimes it the "How" that isn't working so that's why I ask.
Since it's the weekend, I would try calling the pharmacist if you can't reach your doctor's office.
I wouldn't guess your UTI can be gone after only taking 3 pills.
Are you supposed to be taking the pills on a full or empty stomach? Are you taking them with plenty of water? Again, your pharmacist might be able to help you out.
I have taken some antibiotics that I didn't tolerate very well so my doctor had me cut them in half. Instead of taking them twice a day, I took 1/2 pill, 4 times a day, for the full dosage period. It helped with the stomach upset. I also have been told that even though it says to take them on an empty stomach, if they make you nauseous, it's okay to have a little something to eat.
I don't know what you're taking. I'm not a doctor or anything. I think you should ask a professional, for sure.
Best wishes.
Good answers below.
Full stomach important; call doctor for different prescription if this one is too harsh.
The other moms told you about creating resistant bacteria. It's very important, for many reasons, not to do that.
I would go online and lookup yuor antibiotic, searching for the drug's side affects. There are websites onlone that list more side affects than what an insert would tell you. There are certain drugs that people just can't handle. Sulfa drugs (like Bactrim) are one of the ones that many people have very bad reactions to, even though it is the most prescribed for UTI.
Many of the UTI drugs are contraindicated for anyone with kidney issues, so watch out and know your drug. My daughter has a history of UTI. Even though she takes the full 7 days, they tend to come back about 3 months later. She has one right now, and we pulse her ABX. She has Bactrim and Amoxicillin, and I pulse them(rotate them every other day)-Less chance to build up resistance that way. They wanted to give her Nitrofur Mac and I said uh- no!!!!! That drug is extremely bad. I found one site that said Nitrofuran is recognized by the FDA as a carcinogen/mutagen. I see no need toput someone on that drug unless there was absolutely no other choice.
Garlic pills are always good. And ask for an antifungal prescription also, so you dont get a yeast infection from the abx.
If you are lucky it won't come back.
If you are not lucky, congrats, you have just made the bacteria stronger and grown a resistant strain, that now will be harder to treat.
I would suggest that you call your doctor. They do tell you to contact them if you have any side effects... they MEAN it! Call.
Please be very careful with UTI's. if they go untreated or get worse the infection could go straight to your kidneys and you will be in far more pain and danger.
Call your Dr and let them know what's going on.
I'm dealing with one right now and my Dr said if I noticed I'm still having symptoms after 5 days to please call her so she can prescribe a different antibiotic. She said sometimes one will work for some while others work better on others.
Best of luck to you
It may come back but if it was UTI and you want to help make sure it is out of your system without fininishing your meds get some 100% cranberry juice it can be cran grape or some other combo but make sure it is not a cocktail but 100% juice. Good luck UTI's Suck
Why did it not occur to you to call your Dr. and let him know that the medicine makes you sick? I'm sure there's another medicine he can give you, but not if you don't tell him! Don't mess with a UTI - it can get much, much worse if not treated properly.
go to the health foods store and get an herbal supplement that has uva ursi and goldenseal.
