Info About the Drug Bactrim

I took Bactrim a couple of times with no side effects. I think you may be allergic to sulfa. I have an allergy to anything with penicillin so sulfa is the next best thing for me. The drug is safe for those without a allergy.

I had a reaction to that medicine too- actually itching from the inside out of my body. They told me that I'm allergic to it, and should avoid all "sulfa" medications. I would stay off of it if I were you. There must be something else they can give you!

My son had a rash and a high fever as a result of Bactrim.

I can't take many antihistamines because they make me feel "weird". Pay attention to your body. You know what's best.

My 6 year old daughter has been taking this everyday to prevent bladder infection for about a year now (she has urine reflux) Anyway, she has had no problems on it. I guess everyone has the potential to react differently. I would definately insist on another medicine. If you just stop taking it, the infection might not go away.

There are so many other meds. you coulde taking if you thinkit is the medicine I would ask my doctor for another one. My daughter got horrible stomach cramps from a medicine when she was younger. the doctor kept insisting it was not the medicine. I insisted we tried something else and all her stomach problems went away. Everyone can have a different reaction to medicines, you need to listen to what your body is telling you.

I once took Bactrim for a UTI and the next morning I awoke to a rash over my entire body and a fever of almost 104 degrees. I was told to take antihistamines for the rash and Tylenol to reduce the fever. I now know that I am allergic to "sulfa" drugs. There are other things they can give you to treat your UTI. STOP the Bactrim!

Everyone's body is different, but Bactrim is a sulfa drug, one of the oldest antibiotics around, and usually the first choice for UTIs. (sadly, I know this from having a lot of UTIs!) Your doctor wasn't doing anything wrong - antibiotic-resistant UTIs are a problem and doctors are doing the right thing using the oldest/mildest antibiotics first.

Having said that - sulfa drugs make me queasy so I avoid them too, unless I have no choice. Macrobid (which is also available in generic) is my preferred choice for treating UTIs. Your doc may be able to switch, or ask if you can cut the pills you have in half (depending on the dose they gave you - I have done that before with the doctor's OK.)

YES my husband did and had same side affects.
STOP taking
and tell them to put you on a different antibiotic
i normally have them give me amoxicilin for bladder infection.
PLUS have your pharmacy put on your record you are allergic to bactim.
Also stop using scented pads when you got period and scented soaps down in that area.Use Dove unscented it comes in a bottle.
This will help you.

ASAP suggest that amoxicilin and start that.
plus eat yogurt while on it maybe one a day but 4 hours before or after antibiotic not close or antibiotic will not absorb in body.

You could be having an allergic reaction. Stop taking it and I would avoid sulfa drugs from now on.

Often times, a bladder infection is cured from ONE dose of abx, and that is something my doctor told me.

Also, if you know the type of bacteria you have.... (ask your doctor)... you can go to the health food store and get D-Mannose. It's a natural sugar that E Coli (the most common bacteria that causes UTI's) naturally clings to. All you need to do is take D-Mannose and lots of water and your UTI will go away. Fast. You will have relief the first day.
