Blood in the stool can be a sign of something serious. I would keep samples and have a doctor see her and the samples ASAP.
My daughter was hospitalized on the 20th-27th of last month, she was on IV meds and then oral meds to continue after that. I have been noticing that her stools are very runny for one thing and then they look like reddish clay (I know that might not make sense seeing as I am saying they are watery, but, if you have seen red clay before, that is the color), then this morning it seemed as if she was having a hard time pooping, yet, it was VERY watery and strings of blood were left on the diaper on her PJ's.
Do you think this is just from the meds she has been on for so long? Or is it something more serious? The doctor said to not worry as long as she is not running a fever, but this cannot be normal?
I took Rosanna off the meds and she is now better; her bowl movements have become regular without the blood and without the red color. Thank you so much for all the answers!

Do you know what kind of meds she was on? I can't remember the name of the antibiotic but my daughter had weird reddish clay looking stools after she was on this one antibiotic (however her pediatrician warned me this would happen). The blood could possibly be from her straining so hard to go (causing hemrhoids possibly)....but I wouldnt chance it. It could be a sign of something wrong. So the doctor said not to worry about it? I would bring her in just to have them check it out. Better safe than sorry. I hope she gets well soon.
I would go into the Doctor's even if he said its fine. I'd want him to see for himself. That can be a sign of a serious problem BUT antibiotics make our bodies do strange things.
I would also look into the Probiotics thing as well - that could really help. I'd also give her easily digestible foods for a few days and plenty of liquids. Perhaps her bottom is hurt from straining, if you haven't checked, I'd look to see if she has developed and hemorrhoids or anal fissures. If there are no hemorrhoids, and you can't visibly see any tears - I'd still take her in. Sometimes anal fissures aren't visible.
Don't freak out though because if there isn't a fever then chances are she isnt super sick, theres probably just something that needs a bit of attention and it will stop. If there was a fever involved I'd worry, but definitely go to a doctor.
Get a second opinion, if your insurance will allow it. I would, if for nothing else, my own peace of mind. If you can't, ask your doc' if you can take him/her a stool sample.
Yep. Omnicef will turn the stools red. Our daughter has been on it several times for ear infections pre-tubes and now post-tubes.
Thank God the pharmacist told us when we picked it up the first time, or we would have panicked.
Keep an eye on what appears to be blood, though. If that doesn't improve in a few days, I'd call the pediatrician back. That isn't how an omnicef reaction presents generally.
Hope she gets to feeling better soon.
Any time that there is blood in the stool is a time for concern. You didn't say what your daughter was in the hospital for, so I am assuming it wasn't for the same issue. If your doctor says not to worry, I would consult another physician. Some medications can cause discoloration in the stool, but that is something that you should be made aware of when you get the prescription filled. If you are unsure of the side effects, consult your pharmacist. Either way, if it is blood in her stool, she should be seen. Make sure to keep her most recent dirty diaper to show to the doctor, as the stool can be tested if necessary.
Good luck and I hope your daughter is better soon!
Does her stool have a foul odor? How frequent are her stools? After being hospitalized and on abx she may have been at risk of contacting a nosocomial (hospital born) infection. Have the pedi do a stool sample to rule out c-diff. You can look up c-diff on a reputable site such as Mayo clinic, another university site or a government health site. I doubt this is what she has, but it is pretty common with adults who have been hospitalized and on abx. and symptoms sound similiar. This is just a thought, so please don't panic. I hope that everything is o.k and your daughter is feeling better by the time you read this.
I'd find a way to get a sample and have it tested. You'd have to check with the DR--you would need the right container, etc to take to the lab.
Sorry. Don't know if my post went through. Maybe a CT scan would help. Have they had a look inside her?
My daughter is doing the same thin and has been taking Cefdinir and was given antibiotic through IV before sent home with meds. I'm also worried
